Chapter 6 - The Betrayal in the Boardroom

The mahogany boardroom on the top floor of Rinaldi Global Logistics in downtown Manhattan smelled of old money, expensive cigars, and suppressed panic. Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the gray skyline of the city stretched out under a heavy, overcast Thursday sky.

Seated at the massive conference table were twelve regional capos and corporate board directors, all dressed in bespoke Italian wool. At the head of the table sat Dean Foster, looking every bit the corporate executive in a navy blue suit, a stack of legal folders piled neatly before him. To his right sat Dr. Julian Hale, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with slightly trembling fingers.

The double doors opened, and Massimo Rinaldi rolled into the room, pushed by a silent, expressionless security guard. His face was pale, his eyes half-closed, giving the distinct impression of a man whose mind was slowly dissolving under the weight of his injuries.

"Gentlemen," Dean began, standing up and clearing his throat with practiced solemnity. "Thank you for attending this emergency proxy session. As you know, Don Rinaldi’s tragic health condition following the Brooklyn Avenue ambush has left him unable to execute his executive duties. In accordance with Article Nine of the Rinaldi-Ashwood charter, I am presenting a motion to transfer full voting authority and proxy management of his sixty-five percent stake to myself and future co-signatory Camille Ashwood."

A murmur rippled through the boardroom. Old-school capos like Sal "The Hammer" Caruso shifted uneasily in their seats. Sal looked across the table at Massimo. "Don Rinaldi... you haven't spoken publicly in six months. Are you consenting to this transfer of your own free will?"

Massimo kept his head bowed, his hands resting limply on his lap. He didn't answer immediately. The silence stretched so thin that the hum of the air conditioner sounded like a jet engine.

Dean stepped in smoothly, placing a hand on the back of Massimo’s wheelchair. "As you can see, Sal, Massimo’s cognitive functions are severely impaired. Dr. Hale’s medical report confirms advanced neurological decline."

Dr. Hale cleared his throat, standing up with a leather portfolio. "Indeed, gentlemen. My clinical assessments indicate that Don Rinaldi’s capacity to manage corporate assets has degraded by at least eighty percent. The neurotoxin—ah, I mean, the neurological trauma—is irreversible."

Sal Caruso narrowed his eyes, sensing something wrong. "You slipped, Doctor. You almost said neurotoxin."

Dr. Hale’s face drained of color. "I—misspoke. I meant neuro-trauma."

"No, Doctor," a voice echoed through the room—not weak, not gravelly, but sharp, clear, and cold as a winter blade.

Massimo Rinaldi slowly lifted his head. The dull, lifeless look in his gray eyes vanished, replaced by a terrifying, predatory clarity. He didn't need the wheelchair's push-rims; with a sudden, fluid motion, he stood up entirely on his own two feet, gripping the polished edge of the mahogany table with both hands.

The entire boardroom froze. Sal Caruso dropped his cigar. Dr. Hale stumbled backward into the wall, his portfolio scattering papers across the plush carpet.

Dean Foster’s face turned the color of curdled milk. "Massimo... what... how are you standing?"

Massimo didn't answer him directly. Instead, he reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small digital audio player, and set it squarely in the center of the conference table. He pressed play.

The pristine, unmistakable voices of Dean Foster and Camille Ashwood echoed through the high-ceilinged room, discussing the poison, the fake medical reports, the planned corporate coup, and the assassination of domestic staff.

Once we sign the marriage contract and file the emergency medical proxy, Massimo won't have the legal standing...

The recording played on, filling the silent room with the sound of pure, unadulterated treason.

Sal Caruso slowly stood up, pulling a heavy brass-plated revolver from his shoulder holster and laying it flat on the table, pointing straight at Dean Foster’s chest.

"Well, Dean," Sal rumbled, his voice dripping with lethal contempt. "Looks like someone forgot to check if the boss was actually sleeping."
