Chapter 2: What Was Hidden Under The Coat

Hospital security arrived within minutes.
The man became increasingly agitated.
"He's my son!" he yelled.
"Look at him! He's just scared because he's sick."
The boy immediately shook his head.
"No... no..."
I crouched beside him.
"What's your name?"
"Ethan."
"Is this your father?"
The child hesitated.
Then tears filled his eyes.
"I don't know."
The crowd gasped.
The man's face instantly changed.
For a split second, the friendly father act disappeared.
And what replaced it made my stomach turn.
Pure panic.
Security requested identification.
The man reluctantly handed over a wallet.
But before anyone could inspect it, Rex began barking furiously again.
He lunged toward the man's coat.
This time the coat opened.
Something fell to the ground.
A small pink sneaker.
The crowd fell silent.
The sneaker clearly belonged to a young child.
But Ethan wasn't wearing pink shoes.
The man quickly tried to pick it up.
Too late.
A nurse stared at the shoe.
Her face went white.
"Oh my God..."
She pulled out her phone.
"I've seen this before."
She showed the screen to security.
Earlier that morning, a statewide missing-child alert had been issued.
A seven-year-old girl named Lily had disappeared from a shopping center nearly eighty miles away.
The photograph showed her smiling.
And wearing pink sneakers.
Exactly like the one lying on the pavement.
The man's breathing became erratic.
His hands shook.
Security immediately moved closer.
"Sir," one guard said.
"Open the coat."
The man took one step backward.
Then another.
Then he ran.
But he never got far.
Rex exploded forward.
Within seconds, my partner had him pinned to the ground.
The crowd erupted into screams.
As officers handcuffed him, security opened the coat.
And what they discovered underneath left everyone speechless.
There was a hidden harness sewn into the lining.
A harness designed for carrying a child.
A child who was no longer there.

But where had she gone?
And who exactly was Ethan?
