Chapter 7 - Shattered Illusions

The secure line to Victor Vance’s private terminal was established through a scrambled satellite relay routed across three continents. The digital conference room showed a blank screen on the other end, waiting for our input.
Richard typed a short string of encrypted code into the terminal, initiating a direct video feed.
A few seconds later, the screen flickered to life. Sitting in a leather executive chair in a high-rise penthouse overlooking Zurich was a man in his late sixties with silver hair, cold gray eyes, and an expression of unmasked arrogance.
Victor Vance.
"I wondered how long it would take for Carl’s lapdog to reach out," Victor said, his voice smooth, cold, and dripping with condescension. "And who is this? Ah, the grieving widow. The sweet little hospice volunteer who married a dying ghost for a shot at forty million dollars."
I didn't flinch. I kept my posture straight, my eyes locked onto the camera lens, channeling every ounce of the strength Carl had spent twenty years protecting.
"You have the wrong impression, Mr. Vance," I said, my voice steady and clear. "I didn't marry him for the money. I married him because I loved him. And unlike you, I know the truth about what he built—and what he left behind."
Victor’s cold expression flickered for a fraction of a second, replaced by a dark frown. "You're a naive girl playing a dangerous game. Those funds belong to the syndicate. If you don't transfer them back to our offshore accounts within twenty-four hours, your little townhouse won't just have broken windows—it will be leveled to the foundation."
"Is that a threat?" I asked, leaning slightly closer to the microphone.
"It's a business reality," Victor sneered.
"Well, here is my business reality," I said, pressing a key on the laptop that uploaded the encrypted flash drive data directly to a federal oversight committee and three major international news outlets simultaneously. "Every shell company, every illegal wire transfer, every bribe paid to government officials by Vance-Sterling over the past twenty years has just been transmitted to the Department of Justice and the global press."
Victor’s face instantly drained of color. He slammed his hands down on his desk, leaping to his feet. "You absolute fool! You've destroyed us both!"
"No," I replied calmly. "I've destroyed you. Carl set this trap a decade ago, waiting for the exact moment your greed forced your hand. The money in my trust isn't yours to take. It's the bounty on your empire."

I reached out and clicked the disconnect button, plunging the screen into total darkness.
The room fell silent. My heart was pounding like a jackhammer, but a profound, overwhelming sense of liberation washed over me. The ghost who had watched over me for twenty years had given me the tools to finish the fight, and I had just pulled the trigger.
