Chapter 6 - A New Dawn

One year to the day after that terrifying Christmas evening in Sylvia’s kitchen, the snow fell softly over the capital, blanketing the city in a pure, untouched white.
There was no oven burning my face. There were no arrogant in-laws sneering from the dining room table. There was no fear, no hiding, and no silence.
Instead, the house was filled with the rich, comforting scent of roasted cinnamon apples, vanilla, and fresh pine from a massive Christmas tree standing proudly in the living room, decorated with handmade ornaments and bright silver stars.
Little Hope, now a walking, talking toddler with bright curious eyes, toddled across the hardwood floor on chubby legs, chasing a small red rubber ball right into my lap.
I scooped her up, laughing as she buried her face in my neck, squeaking with delight.
“Are you ready for your first Christmas dinner, sweetheart?” I asked, kissing her soft cheek.
Marcus walked in from the kitchen carrying a tray of warm cider, followed closely by my father, who was carrying a stack of brightly wrapped presents.
“The turkey is resting, the potatoes are whipped to perfection, and nobody—absolutely nobody—is standing in the kitchen,” Marcus announced with a wide grin, raising his mug in a toast.
My father walked over, clinking his mug against Marcus’s, and then touched mine gently. He looked down at me, his eyes shining with deep, unshakeable pride.
“To new beginnings,” my father said softly. “And to the strongest woman I know.”

“To new beginnings,” I repeated, smiling as the fire crackled warmly in the hearth and the winter snow fell silently outside.
I looked down at my daughter, wrapped safely in my arms, and then out the window toward the quiet, peaceful street. The storm was over. The past was buried. And for the first time in my life, every single step forward belonged entirely to me.
