CHAPTER 2: The Survivor
The photograph circulated around the table.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody breathed.
Because the man in the picture wasn't supposed to exist.
His name was Daniel Ross.
Official reports stated he had drowned during the cruise accident.
His death certificate had been issued five years earlier.
Yet there he stood in the image.
Alive.
Smiling.
Evelyn suddenly stood.
"This is absurd."
Her voice cracked.
"Photographs can be manipulated."
Sophia shook her head.
"Not this one."
She opened the envelope again.
This time she removed several documents.
Among them were passport records.
Bank transfers.
Security reports.
And a notarized statement.
The hospital attorney grabbed the paperwork first.
As he read, his expression darkened.
Then he slowly looked up.
"Oh my God."
The room waited.
The attorney swallowed hard.
"Daniel Ross is alive."
A stunned silence followed.
Evelyn's chair scraped backward.
"No."
"He contacted investigators three months ago."
The attorney's voice shook.
"He has been hiding under federal protection."
Shock spread through the room.
Sophia looked toward her daughter.
The little girl squeezed her stuffed rabbit tighter.
Five years.
Five years of searching.
Five years of being told she was paranoid.
Five years of being treated like a grieving widow who couldn't let go.
But she had never stopped digging.
And eventually someone contacted her.
Daniel Ross.
The survivor everyone thought was dead.
The man who knew exactly what happened aboard that ship.
Sophia pulled out one final item.
A flash drive.
"This contains Daniel's testimony."
Evelyn staggered backward.
Her hand pressed against her chest.
"What did he tell you?"
Sophia's eyes hardened.
"The truth."
The screen at the front of the conference room flickered to life.
A video began playing.
Daniel appeared.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakably alive.
His voice filled the room.
"The accident wasn't an accident."
Gasps erupted.
Daniel continued.
"The ship's maintenance team discovered severe structural damage before departure."
Several board members stared at Evelyn.
Daniel spoke again.
"The cruise should have been canceled."
The room grew colder.
"But it wasn't."
His eyes lowered.
"Because canceling would have exposed financial fraud involving several investors."
Evelyn collapsed back into her chair.
Daniel continued speaking.
"The passengers were never warned."
Tears filled Sophia's eyes.
"My husband discovered the documents."
Daniel paused.
"He planned to report everything."
The room knew what came next.
