Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

Dawson pushed off the doorframe and walked slowly toward me across the concrete floor, his footsteps echoing in the tomb-like quiet of the archive room.

“I found out two days after you moved into the penthouse,” Dawson admitted, his voice quiet, rough around the edges.

“And you didn't tell me?” I snapped, the betrayal burning hot in my chest. “You let me play the fool! You let me think I was saving your life, when all along I was just a puppet on a string pulled by your father!”

“I didn't tell you because I didn't want to lose you!” Dawson shouted back, his control finally snapping as he grabbed my shoulders, pulling me close. His dark eyes were burning with raw, agonizing intensity. “Do you think I wanted my father to manipulate you into this? Do you think I want my life governed by his sick chess games?”

“Then why didn't you send me away?” I cried, pushing against his chest. “Why let me stay? Why kiss me?”

“Because from the moment you poured that ice water over my head, Clara, you were the only real thing in my life!” Dawson roared, his hands sliding down to grip my waist, pulling me hard against his chest. “My mother was murdered, my father treats me like a weapon, and everyone around me is waiting for me to snap. But you... you stood up to me. You made me feel human for the first time in two years.”

I stared up at him, tears spilling over my lashes, my heart shattering into a thousand pieces.

“We can’t stay here, Dawson,” I whispered, the harsh reality crashing down around us. “Your father, your uncle, this entire syndicate—it’s built on lies and blood. If we stay, we’ll never be free.”

Before Dawson could answer, heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway.

Vittorio Moretti stepped into the archive room, flanked by two armed guards. He didn't look surprised to see us standing together. In fact, he looked entirely satisfied, like a general watching two pieces fall precisely into place.

“Drama in the family archives,” Vittorio said smoothly, leaning on his gold-tipped cane. “How poetic. I see you’ve found the paperwork, Clara.”

“You set me up,” I said, stepping out of Dawson’s arms and turning to face the mafia patriarch. “You ruined my father, you engineered my entire life, just to fix your son.”

“I didn't ruin your father, Miss Miller. Bad investments did that. I merely capitalized on an opportunity,” Vittorio replied coldly. “And it worked, didn't it? Look at him. For two years, my son was a ticking time bomb ready to tear this syndicate apart. Now? He’s focused. He’s stable. Because of you.”

“I’m resigning,” I said, my voice shaking with absolute defiance. “Keep your ten thousand a week. Keep the penthouse. Clear my father’s debt right now, and let me walk out those front gates.”

Vittorio smiled—a cold, terrifying expression that didn't reach his eyes.

“You can walk out anytime you like, Clara. But the moment you cross those gates without Dawson, my enforcers collect on your father’s remaining balance. And Dawson... well, Dawson returns to the bottle, the rage, and the bloodbath.”

He looked directly at his son.

“You have a choice, boy. Keep the girl, and take your rightful place as the head of the Moretti empire at the upcoming syndicate summit. Or run away with her like a coward, and watch everything your mother died for burn to the ground.”

Vittorio turned and walked out of the room, leaving us standing in the deafening silence of the underground vault.
