Chapter 3 - The Legal Trap
The move to the city was quiet, swift, and deliberate. Joanna and Simon rented a small, sunlight-filled apartment that smelled of fresh paint rather than the stagnant history of their parents’ house. However, peace was a luxury they hadn't yet earned.
Two days after the graduation, a courier arrived with a thick envelope. It wasn't a birthday card; it was a formal "Cease and Desist" and a notice of intent to initiate a custody audit. Denise’s legal team claimed that Simon, as a young adult, was being "manipulated" by his aunt, and that the "family trust"—an inheritance left by their grandmother, Clara—was being mismanaged by Joanna.
Joanna’s hands trembled as she read the legal jargon. She had spent years working double shifts as a waitress and cleaning houses to ensure Simon never needed to touch that trust fund. She wanted it to be his safety net for law school.
"They’re attacking you because they know you’re the only thing standing between them and that money," Simon said, his eyes scanning the documents. He had grown up watching Joanna balance checkbooks at the kitchen table; he knew every sacrifice. "Denise doesn't want me, Mom. She wants the liquidity. The interest on that fund has ballooned over nineteen years. She’s broke, and Jonathan is leveraging her into a corner."
Joanna reached out, taking the papers. "I kept every receipt, Simon. Every box of pencils, every vaccination record, every school fee I paid out of pocket. I thought I was doing it to keep you stable. I didn't realize I was building a case against my own sister."

She reached out to an old acquaintance from her brief, abandoned stint in social work—a fierce advocate named Sarah. When Sarah reviewed the documents, she whistled. "Joanna, you didn't just 'take care' of him. You became the de facto parent in the eyes of the law. If we can prove Denise completely abandoned her parental obligations, her claim to his 'inheritance' as his guardian is legally void. But she’s going to drag your name through the mud to prove you were an 'unfit' influence."
The trap was set. Denise wanted to paint Joanna as a kidnapper who brainwashed a child; Joanna had to become a woman who protected a man.
