Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The next morning, the house was unnervingly quiet. I had kept Charlotte home from preschool, claiming a "fever," though her only ailment was a deep-seated fear of the front door.

While she slept, I sat at my dining room table with my laptop. My career in project management had taught me one fundamental truth: chaos is just a system that hasn’t been mapped yet. If my mother and Kendra wanted to frame me as an unfit mother, I would map out their every inconsistency, their every lie, and their every failure.

I started with the school records. I had access to the parent portal. I pulled up reports from the last six months. Not a single incident of aggression. Then, I drafted a detailed timeline of every time I had traveled for work, cross-referencing it with the dates my mother had "volunteered" to watch Charlotte.

My phone buzzed. A text from my mother: “I’ve spoken to our family lawyer. He agrees that given your travel schedule, a formal guardianship review is necessary. It’s for Charlotte’s own good.”

I didn't reply. Instead, I opened a blank document and titled it: Project Preservation.

I called a friend—a high-powered family law attorney named Sarah—under the guise of "consulting on a client issue." I laid out the situation, framing it hypothetically. Sarah’s tone shifted from casual to razor-sharp within seconds.

“Mallerie, listen to me,” she said. “If they are claiming you are an unfit mother due to your work schedule, you need to create an impenetrable shield of stability. Document everything. Every meal you prepare, every lesson you help with, every moment of affection. And most importantly, record the history of their harassment.”

By noon, I had a binder started. By evening, I had engaged a private investigator. I wasn't just going to defend myself; I was going to find out what my mother and Kendra were really hiding. My mother loved to hold herself up as the matriarch of the community, but everyone has a closet full of secrets. I was going to find theirs.
