Chapter 2 - THE MIDNIGHT RESCUE AND THE GATHERING STORM

The clock on my nightstand glowed 12:14 AM.
The screen of my phone illuminated the dark bedroom with Clara’s desperate message: “Mom, I need to see you tomorrow. I found something hidden in Liam’s office... I think I'm in terrible danger.”
I tried calling her back instantly. The phone rang twice, then went straight to voicemail. I tried again. Dead air.
My heart hammered against my ribs, a cold wave of adrenaline overriding the fatigue of the long day. I threw off the bedcovers, my mind racing through every worst-case scenario. Liam Vance was not merely a callous, arrogant corporate climber; he was a cornered animal desperate to save his failing empire, and he had already proven he was willing to use Clara as human collateral. If she had stumbled upon the full extent of the Blue Lantern Logistics fraud, she was standing in the crosshairs of a ruthless criminal conspiracy.
I did not hesitate. I reached for my secure satellite phone and dialed Julian Hayes.
“Julian,” I said, my voice cutting through the sleepiness in his tone with absolute steel. “I need our private security detail deployed to the Vance estate on Cedar Park Avenue immediately. Clear it with local law enforcement liaison units. I want a perimeter established within twenty minutes.”
“Mrs. Holloway?” Julian asked, fully awake now, the gravity in my voice registering instantly. “Is Clara in danger?”
“She texted me minutes ago saying she found something in Liam’s office and believes she’s in danger. Now her phone is off. I am driving over there right now.”
“Do not go in alone, ma’am,” Julian urged, the sound of rustling papers indicating he was already getting out of bed. “I am dispatching our lead security team to meet you at the gates. I’m coming too.”
“Meet me at the north service entrance,” I instructed, already pulling on a heavy wool coat over my silk blouse. “We move fast, and we leave nothing to chance.”
Ten minutes later, my older sedan tore down the deserted suburban streets, its engine purring with a quiet, hidden power that belied its modest exterior. When I pulled up near the wrought-iron gates of the Vance estate, two unmarked black SUVs belonging to Holloway Global’s corporate security division were already idling in the shadows.
Julian stepped out of the lead vehicle, adjusting his trench coat against the biting night chill.
“We have thermal scanners and perimeter feeds,” Julian reported quietly as I stepped out of my car. “The main house lights are on in the second-floor study. No movement downstairs.”
“Give me the master keycard override,” I said, extending my hand.
Julian hesitated for a fraction of a second, knowing the legal and physical risks, but seeing the unyielding determination in my eyes, he handed over the encrypted security fob. Holloway Global had engineered the smart-home security systems for half the elite properties in North Carolina, including the Vance estate, back when Liam’s father was still trying to win our corporate endorsement.
We moved across the manicured lawn like ghosts, bypassing the ornamental fountains and stepping up to the side service door. I pressed the fob against the scanner. With a soft click, the heavy oak door unlocked.
Inside, the house was dead silent.
We slipped into the grand foyer, our footsteps muffled by the thick Persian rugs. As we crept toward the grand staircase leading to Liam’s private second-floor study, the sound of raised voices drifted down through the high vaulted ceiling.
“Where is it, Clara?” Liam’s voice echoed, cold and vibrating with suppressed fury. “You were in my office tonight. You went through my desk. Give me the flash drive.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Clara’s voice answered, cracking with terror.
“Don’t lie to me!” Beatrice chimed in, her voice sharp as glass. “You’ve always been a snooping, ungrateful little parasite! My son is trying to save his family’s legacy while you skulk around looking for ways to ruin us!”
“I didn't take anything!” Clara sobbed. “I just wanted to find our tax papers, and I found... I found the corporate seals for Blue Lantern Logistics. Liam, what have you been doing? Whose signatures are those?”
Slap.
The sickening sound of flesh striking flesh echoed through the stairwell.
My vision turned blood-red.
Before Julian or the security guards could react, I sprinted up the stairs, my hand gripping the heavy iron poker I had grabbed from the downstairs hearth. I burst through the double doors of Liam’s study with a force that rattled the hinges.
Clara was cowering against the mahogany bookshelves, her hand pressed to her reddening cheek, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face. Liam stood over her with his hand raised, while Beatrice hovered nearby with a malicious sneer.
“Touch her again,” I whispered, stepping into the room, “and you won't live to see the sunrise.”
Liam whirled around, his face twisting in shock and disgust as he recognized me standing in his study in my plain cardigan and sensible shoes.
“You?” Liam barked, stepping toward me. “What the hell are you doing in my house? How did you get in here? Security!”
May you like
“Your security is currently tied up outside, Mr. Vance,” Julian Hayes announced smoothly, stepping through the doorway behind me, flanked by two towering security specialists in dark tactical gear.
Liam froze, his eyes darting from Julian to the security guards, sensing for the first time that the chessboard had fundamentally shifted.
