Chapter 8 - Interrogation Room Reality

Exactly one week after Officer Daniels first walked into my living room, the other shoe finally dropped for Evelyn and Melissa.
Detective Daniels called me late Tuesday afternoon.
“Mrs. Harper,” the detective said, his voice crisp and professional. “We’ve completed our formal review of the smart camera footage, the emergency call logs, and your attorney’s submitted statements.”
“Have charges been filed?” I asked, holding my breath.
“Yes, ma'am,” Detective Daniels confirmed. “We served criminal summonses this morning. Your mother has been formally charged with filing a false police report, reckless endangerment, and child abuse. Your sister is facing charges of conspiracy and contributing to the endangerment of a minor.”
I exhaled slowly, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over me.
“Where are they now?”
“They were picked up for questioning at the precinct an hour ago,” Daniels replied. “When your mother arrived, she assumed she could talk her way out of it the way she did at your house. She started demanding to speak to the chief of staff. Let’s just say the interrogation room was a rude awakening.”
He wasn't exaggerating.
According to the subsequent police report, when Evelyn was told she was facing potential jail time and felony records, she threw a full-scale, screaming temper tantrum in the precinct holding area—the exact kind of unhinged performance she had spent years punishing my daughter for exhibiting.
They thought they were untouchable.

Instead, they had walked right into the legal trap they so carelessly constructed.
