Chapter 8 - The Siege of the Berkshires

The silence of the woods was shattered on the eighth day.

They found us. It wasn't the police; it was Vivian’s private security, led by a man named Thorne who had served as her shadow for twenty years. They didn't knock. They moved through the trees like ghosts, surrounding the cabin with a precision that turned my blood cold.

"Julian!" My mother’s voice rang out from a megaphone, echoing through the pines. It sounded detached, almost bored. "Come out, darling. Let's finish this properly. I have a nursery waiting back at the estate. A real one. Not this hovel."

I looked at Audrey. She was already packing a small bag, her hand resting protectively over her belly. She looked at me, not with fear, but with an absolute, terrifying peace.

"We don't leave," I said, locking the doors and windows. "We defend."

I had prepared for this. I hadn't just spent the last week gathering digital evidence; I had spent it reaching out to the victims of the Shadow Ledger—the people my mother had once ruined, who now had the power to reclaim their lives.

"Is it time?" Audrey asked.

I pulled out the burner phone and pressed a single button. The signal didn't go to the news this time. It went to the authorities, the victims, and the press—every piece of evidence, every record of abuse, every financial crime, all released into the public domain simultaneously.

The sound of engines roared in the distance. The police were coming, drawn by the massive leak of criminal activity. My mother’s mercenaries hesitated, their phones lighting up as the world began to dismantle their employer.

The siege had begun, but the power had finally shifted. We were no longer running; we were waiting for the inevitable collapse of the empire that had sought to swallow us whole.
