CHAPTER 2 – THE THINGS HE NEVER SAID OUT LOUD

The door closed behind the mistress with a soft click.

Not loud.

Not dramatic.

Just final.

That was the worst part.

The apartment didn’t feel like it had changed physically.

But everything inside it had shifted.

Elena was still on the floor.

Her breathing uneven, one hand still instinctively near her stomach, the other pressed against the cold marble as if the surface could keep her anchored to reality.

Daniel stood a few steps away.

Not rushing to her.

Not calling for help.

Not explaining anything.

Just standing there like someone waiting for a conversation he had been avoiding for a very long time.

Elena looked up at him again.

This time, there was no plea.

Only disbelief trying to organize itself into something coherent.

“Who is she?” Elena asked quietly.

Her voice didn’t shake as much now.

Not because she was calm.

But because something inside her had already started breaking in a way that didn’t allow fear to lead anymore.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

He glanced toward the hallway where the mistress had disappeared.

Then back to Elena.

“You already know part of that answer,” he said.

Elena’s jaw tightened slightly.

“No,” she replied.

“I don’t.”

A pause.

Daniel exhaled slowly.

Like he was choosing words carefully—not to protect her feelings, but to reduce consequences.

“Her name is Claire,” he said finally.

Elena repeated it under her breath.

“Claire…”

It sounded ordinary.

Too ordinary for what had just happened.

“What is she to you?” Elena asked.

That question changed his expression slightly.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Something more complicated.

History.

Daniel stepped closer, but still not close enough to help her up.

That distance mattered.

“She’s someone I worked with,” he said.

Elena narrowed her eyes slightly.

“That’s not what I asked.”

Silence.

Then Daniel corrected himself.

“She’s someone I used to trust.”

The word used hit harder than anything else so far.

Elena looked down briefly.

Then back up.

“And now?” she asked.

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

Because now was the part he had been avoiding for a long time.

Finally, he said:

“Now she works with me… differently.”

Elena let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

It wasn’t humor.

It was shock trying to disguise itself.

“Differently,” she repeated.

“You bring her into our home, I’m on the floor, and you call that ‘differently’?”

Daniel’s expression tightened slightly.

“This is not what you think it is,” he said.

Elena shook her head slowly.

“That’s what everyone says right before they lie properly.”

That line made something flicker in his eyes.

But he didn’t deny it.

Instead, he stepped closer again.

This time, just slightly.

Enough to be within reach.

“Elena,” he said more quietly, “you need to listen to me.”

She looked at him directly.

“I have been listening,” she replied.

“That’s the problem.”

A beat of silence.

Then Daniel said something that made the air feel heavier.

“This situation was already in motion before today.”

Elena frowned slightly.

“What situation?”

Daniel hesitated.

Not because he didn’t know.

Because saying it would make it real.

Finally:

“The separation.”

Elena blinked.

For a second, she didn’t understand the word.

Then it landed.

“Separation,” she repeated slowly.

“You mean divorce.”

Daniel didn’t correct her.

That silence confirmed it.

Elena stared at him.

Not loudly.

Not emotionally.

Just… still.

Like her mind was trying to catch up to something that had already moved far ahead of her.

“You were going to leave me,” she said.

Daniel looked away briefly.

“I was going to tell you.”

That was the sentence that broke something new.

Not the action.

The timing.

Elena shifted slightly, struggling to sit more upright.

“And when?” she asked.

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was the answer.

Elena nodded slowly, as if something finally made sense.

“So she’s not the reason,” she said quietly.

“She’s just the replacement.”

Daniel’s eyes snapped back to her.

“That’s not fair.”

Elena’s voice sharpened slightly for the first time.

“What part of this is fair?”

Silence.

Heavy again.

Daniel ran a hand through his hair, exhaling through his nose.

“This isn’t about replacing you,” he said.

“It’s about everything collapsing if I don’t make a decision.”

Elena frowned.

“Collapsing how?”

He looked at her now more directly.

And for the first time, there was something closer to honesty.

“Business,” he said.

A pause.

“Pressure. Contracts. People watching everything I do.”

Elena shook her head slowly.

“You’re telling me my marriage is a business decision.”

Daniel didn’t deny it.

And that was worse than any argument.

Elena looked down at her hands for a moment.

Then asked quietly:

“And the baby?”

That question made him pause.

Longer this time.

He looked at her stomach.

Then away again.

“I care about the baby,” he said carefully.

Elena’s voice dropped.

“But not enough to stay.”

Silence.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Because anything he said would make it worse.

And in that silence, Elena understood something painful but clear:

She had not been part of a decision.

She had been part of a problem being managed.

Somewhere down the hallway, the front door clicked again.

Claire had not gone far.

Or perhaps she had never intended to leave completely.

Daniel noticed it too.

His posture tightened slightly.

Elena saw it.

And for the first time since everything began, she realized something else:

May you like

She was not the only one being watched in this situation.

She was also being evaluated.
