Chapter 4 - Sarah Appears

It was 4:15 PM when the hospital security desk notified us that a woman had just walked into the emergency lobby, demanding to see her child.
Sarah.
Within two minutes, Officer Hayes and a backup patrol officer positioned themselves quietly outside the consultation room doors. Dr. Vance stood beside me, her arms crossed defensively, while I sat in a plastic chair, my hands clasped tightly in my lap.
The heavy glass door pushed open, and Sarah stepped inside.
She looked immaculate, as always. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a sleek, flawless ponytail; her beige trench coat was neatly belted; her makeup was pristine. But there was a wild, glassy look in her eyes—a chilling disconnect that made her seem like a ghost inhabiting a living body.
“Where is my son?” Sarah demanded, her voice cutting sharply through the quiet room. She didn't look at me, nor did she acknowledge Officer Hayes standing by the door. Her gaze fixed solely on Dr. Vance. “I demand to know where Ethan is. My husband called me, babbling nonsense about the police and hospitals. This is an outrage.”
“Sarah,” I said, standing up slowly from my chair.
She finally turned her head toward me, her lips curling into a tight, humorless smile.
“Ah, Margaret. Of course you’re meddling,” Sarah said smoothly, stepping further into the room. “You’ve always interfered in our lives, haven't you? Always inspecting our home, judging how I raise my child, acting like you know better than me.”
“Sarah, stop it,” I said, my voice trembling with suppressed rage. “You bruised your two-month-old baby. You left finger-shaped purple marks across his stomach.”
For a fraction of a second, the immaculate mask slipped. Her eyes flickered with panic, replaced instantly by cold defiance.
“He wouldn't stop crying,” Sarah whispered, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous hiss. “He cried for hours. He was trying to ruin everything. I just needed him to be quiet. Just for a minute.”
The confession hung in the air, absolute and undeniable.
Officer Hayes stepped forward instantly, his hand resting on the holster of his service weapon.
“Sarah Russell?” he said clearly.
She turned, blinking in surprise as the officer produced a pair of steel handcuffs.
“You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law...”
As the cuffs clicked sharply around her slender wrists, Sarah didn't scream or fight. She simply stared at me with dead, unblinking eyes, whispering, “He ruined it. You both ruined it.”

She was escorted out of the hospital through a side exit, straight into a waiting patrol car bound for the county detention center.
And just like that, the monster at the center of the model apartment was locked away. But the damage she had left in her wake was only beginning to surface.
