Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

The time for games was coming to an end; the time for ironclad evidence had begun. I needed the final piece: the doctor’s confession. I met Dr. Aris one last time, giving him a fake identity and a suitcase filled with enough cash to buy a new life in a different country. In exchange, he used his old connections to contact the surgeon who had been prepared to perform the "procedure" on me.

I met the surgeon in a sterile, dimly lit park. He was terrified of the audit I had "threatened" him with. I didn't need to threaten him with jail; I threatened him with the loss of his medical license and the public revelation of his financial ties to Jared’s company.

He didn't just confess—he handed over the surgical order signed by Jared, authorizing the unnecessary procedure. It was the "smoking gun." With the audio recording and the signed document, I now had the power to not only ruin Jared’s reputation but to put him behind bars for life.

I took the evidence and sat in my car for an hour, just holding the flash drive. My hands didn't shake. The pain in my stomach from the surgery I’d escaped was now merely a dull echo of a war I had already won.
