Chapter 2 - The Whispered Voice on the Line

The digital clock on the hallway wall glowed with a harsh, unyielding red light: 7:42 PM. My thumb shook so violently against the cool glass screen of my phone that I dialed 911 twice before the digits finally registered in the correct sequence. The emergency dispatcher’s voice answered instantly, calm, steady, and clinical, cutting through the roaring blood in my ears.
“911. What is your emergency?”
I pressed my back hard against the floral-patterned wallpaper of the hallway, keeping my eyes locked on the narrow sliver of warm light spilling through the cracked bathroom door. Inside, the low, rhythmic murmur of Michael’s voice continued—smooth, hypnotic, and utterly chilling.
“I need help,” I whispered, my voice choking on a suffocating sob that I fought desperately to swallow back down. “I need police officers dispatched to my house immediately. Right now.”
“Ma'am, I need you to take a deep breath and tell me your address. What is happening right now?”
“My name is Clara Vance. My address is 4142 Oakridge Lane,” I spoke into the receiver, my fingers digging into my palm until the nails bit into flesh. “My husband... he’s in the upstairs bathroom with our five-year-old daughter. He has a digital kitchen timer and a paper cup. She’s terrified. He’s administering... I don’t know what he’s administering, but she’s constantly sick, she’s always exhausted, and he calls them ‘bath games’—secrets she’s strictly forbidden from telling me.”
On the other end of the line, the dispatcher’s professional tone shifted instantly from routine to absolute, razor-sharp alertness.
“Clara, listen to me very carefully. Are you in a physically safe place right now? Is your daughter in immediate danger?”
“I’m standing right outside the door in the hallway. The door is cracked. I can hear every word,” I gasped, hot tears spilling over my eyelashes and burning my cheeks. “He’s... he’s talking to her about timing. Oh God, what if he’s poisoning her? What if—?”
“Units are being dispatched to your location right now, code three, with lights and sirens. Do not confront him under any circumstances. Stay on the line with me, Clara. Do you hear me? Stay on the line.”

Inside the bathroom, the high-pitched, mechanical ding of the digital kitchen timer cut through the air.
My breath caught in my throat, freezing my lungs.
