PART 2: THE LETTER FROM A DEAD MAN

For several seconds, nobody moved.
The sealed envelope rested on the hospital bed like a bomb waiting to explode.
Daniel couldn't take his eyes off it.
His hands trembled.
Because he recognized the handwriting immediately.
There was no mistake.
The name written across the front belonged to his older brother.
Michael Lawson.
The brother who had died seven years earlier.
The brother whose funeral Daniel still remembered as if it happened yesterday.
Slowly, Daniel looked up.
His voice barely worked.
"Why do you have this?"
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"Because Michael gave it to me."
The room froze.
Robert immediately stepped forward.
"What are you talking about?"
Daniel stared at his wife in disbelief.
"Michael died seven years ago."
"I know."
"Then how could he give you a letter?"
Emily swallowed hard.
"Because he gave it to me before he died."
Nobody spoke.
Nobody even breathed.
The only sound was the gentle rhythm of the newborn sleeping in her bassinet.
Finally, Emily nodded toward the envelope.
"Open it."
Daniel hesitated.
Every instinct told him he didn't want to know what was inside.
But it was too late now.
Whatever secret had been buried for years was already coming to the surface.
Slowly, he broke the seal.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Several pages long.
The paper looked old.
Worn.
As though it had been read many times.
Daniel unfolded the first page.
Immediately he saw his brother's signature at the bottom.
There was no doubt.
The letter was real.
Then he began reading.
If you're reading this, it means I wasn't able to tell you myself.
And if Emily finally gave you this letter, then something has happened that forced the truth into the open.
Daniel's heart pounded.
His eyes moved quickly across the page.
There is something you don't know about our family.
Something Mom and Dad promised never to discuss.
Across the room, Margaret suddenly looked pale.
Robert lowered his eyes.
Emily noticed immediately.
So did Daniel.
"What is this?"
Nobody answered.
He continued reading.
The night you were born wasn't the night our family became four people.
It became five.
The room became silent.
Complete silence.
Daniel stared at the words.
Then read them again.
And again.
Five people.
Not four.
His pulse quickened.
"What does that mean?"
Robert closed his eyes.
Margaret started crying.
And suddenly Daniel knew.
Whatever was in this letter...
his parents already knew about it.
Daniel continued reading.
You weren't the only baby born that night.
There was another child.
The paper slipped slightly in his hands.
His heart felt like it stopped.
A little girl.
The room spun.
Daniel slowly looked at his parents.
Neither denied it.
Neither looked surprised.
Which somehow made it worse.
"What is he talking about?"
Margaret broke first.
Tears streamed down her face.
"We never wanted you to find out this way."
Daniel stared.
His voice cracked.
"Find out what?"
No answer came.
Only silence.
The kind of silence that confirms the truth before anyone speaks.
Then Emily quietly said:
"You had a sister."
The words hit like a train.
Daniel couldn't breathe.
"What?"
"A twin sister."
The hospital room fell completely still.
For years Daniel believed he had grown up in a normal family.
A loving family.
An honest family.
Now everything felt like a lie.
He looked toward his father.
Robert appeared twenty years older than he had that morning.
"Tell me she's wrong."
Robert didn't.
Instead, he sat down slowly.
Defeated.
And finally told the truth.
The twins had been born prematurely.
Daniel survived.
His sister disappeared.
According to hospital records, she died shortly after birth.
At least that was what everyone had been told.
But years later Michael discovered evidence suggesting something else.
Evidence suggesting the baby girl never died.
The records had been altered.
Names changed.
Documents missing.
Someone had covered up the truth.
Michael spent years investigating.
Secretly.
Alone.
Without telling anyone.
Then, shortly before his death, he found something shocking.
Something so shocking he left the letter behind in case he never got the chance to reveal it.
Daniel's hands shook as he reached the final page.
There, attached to the letter, was a photograph.
An old photograph.
A young woman.
Holding a baby.
On the back was a handwritten note.
"I think I found her."
Daniel stared at the picture.
Then looked toward Emily.
His voice was barely a whisper.
"What does this have to do with the DNA test?"
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
Because she had been waiting years to answer that question.
And the answer would change everything.
She looked toward the sleeping newborn.
Then back at Daniel.
"The DNA test wasn't comparing you to the baby."
Daniel froze.
The room became silent once again.
"What?"
Emily took a deep breath.
Then revealed the truth she had been carrying for months.
"The DNA test was comparing your daughter..."
She paused.
"...to the woman in that photograph."
Daniel felt his entire world tilt sideways.
Because suddenly he understood.
The test wasn't about infidelity.
It wasn't about the baby.
It wasn't about his marriage.
It was about something far bigger.
Something impossible.
Something connected to a sister he never knew existed.
And if the results were correct...
May you like
his missing twin sister had finally been found.
