Chapter 5 - The Sabotage at Dawn

Friday morning arrived with a blinding flash of lightning and a torrential downpour that rattled the massive glass windows of the estate.

The storm outside mirrored the chaos inside.

At precisely 8:30 AM, a sleek black town car rolled up the long private drive, bypassing the security gate with an electronic override code that only high-ranking corporate executives—or former spouses—possessed.

I was in the kitchen helping Leo pack his crayons when the front doors swung open with a resounding slam.

Clacking heels echoed across the marble foyer.

Vanessa Carter had arrived.

She looked like a high-fashion editorial spread stepped straight out of Vogue—impeccably tailored white coat, blonde hair pulled back into a sleek, flawless bun, designer sunglasses perched on the bridge of her nose even indoors. She didn't look like a mother who had missed her children for three years; she looked like a corporate raider executing a hostile takeover.

“Where is he?” Vanessa’s voice rang out, sharp and imperious, echoing up the staircase.

Mason and Luke appeared on the landing instantly, freezing in their tracks. Their faces turned pale as chalk.

“Mom,” Mason breathed, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and terror.

Vanessa stopped at the foot of the stairs, removing her sunglasses and looking up at her sons with a cold, analytical appraisal.

“Look at you two,” Vanessa said, her tone dripping with artificial sweetness that didn't reach her eyes. “Living like feral animals in this drafty museum. Well, boys, pack your bags. We’re going home. Your father’s little experiment of playing single dad is officially over.”

Before the boys could move, William strode down the hallway from his study, his expression like carved granite.

“You’re trespassing, Vanessa,” William said coldly, stopping at the base of the stairs, blocking her path to the boys. “And you’re violating the temporary restraining order issued by the family court yesterday afternoon.”

Vanessa laughed—a high, brittle sound that made my skin crawl.

“Restraining order, William? Please. I have full legal right to check on the welfare of my children, especially when reports indicate this house is being run by an unqualified domestic cleaner with no legal standing.”

Her eyes snapped across the foyer, locking onto me standing by the kitchen island with Leo clutching my skirt.

Vanessa sneered, walking purposefully toward the kitchen. “Oh, look. He’s replaced me with household staff. How utterly predictable. Tell me, sweetheart, how much is the billionaire paying you to warm his bed and wipe his children’s tears?”

The insult stung, but before I could open my mouth to reply, a small, furious voice shouted from the stairs.

“Leave her alone!”

Luke bolted down the stairs, sprinting past his father and standing directly between Vanessa and me. His little fists were clenched so tight his arms were shaking.

“She’s not just staff!” Luke screamed, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “She’s the only person who actually gives a damn about us! You don't love us, Mom! You only want us to win your stupid lawsuit against Dad!”

Vanessa’s face twisted in ugly, venomous rage. She raised her hand, her palm cocked back to strike her son across the face.

My maternal instincts kicked in faster than thought. I dropped my cleaning rag, darted across the kitchen, and stepped firmly between Vanessa and Luke, grabbing her wrist mid-swing with a grip that shocked us both.

“Don't you ever,” I whispered, my voice shaking with a cold, deadly fury, “touch a child in this house again.”
