Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Web

Over the next three days, the federal investigation into Gavin Mercer expanded into a massive corporate and financial audit that dominated morning news broadcasts across the state.

Investigators unraveled a labyrinth of fraudulent shell companies, embezzled venture capital funds, and systemic domestic intimidation tactics. Gavin had not only planned to abduct Ruby and flee to Switzerland; he had been systematically siphoning assets from Vance Industries to fund his escape while framing me for financial irregularities to ensure I could never contest his control.

Detectives also recovered a second hidden phone from Gavin’s executive office safe—a device containing months of threatening text messages sent not only to Claire Dalton, but also to former business associates who had dared to cross him.

On the fourth day after my delivery, I was discharged from the hospital.

Dr. Vale gave me a clean bill of health, though she strictly ordered two weeks of absolute bed rest. As the wheelchair rolled me toward the front glass doors of the hospital, the afternoon sun felt warm and alive against my face.

Waiting for us on the sidewalk was a small group of people who meant the world to me.

Claire stood holding Ruby’s hand.

When Ruby saw my wheelchair coming through the sliding doors, her eyes lit up. She dropped Claire’s hand and ran forward, stopping a few feet away with a shy, tentative smile.

“Sloane!” she called out softly.

I motioned to the nurse pushing my chair to stop, and I carefully scooped my newborn baby into one arm while holding out my other hand to Ruby.

Ruby ran straight into my open arms, burying her face in my shoulder. I wrapped my arms around her tightly, kissing the top of her head where the dark curls brushed against my cheek.

“You’re safe, sweetie,” I whispered. “Nobody is ever going to hurt you or scare you again.”

Claire walked up slowly, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She extended a hand down toward mine, and I grasped it firmly.

“Thank you, Sloane,” Claire said, her voice thick with emotion. “For everything you did. For protecting my little girl when I couldn't.”

“She’s my family, Claire,” I replied softly. “Always.”

We stood there together on the hospital steps—two mothers who had stared down a monster and won, holding the children he had tried to destroy.
