Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Mrs. Sterling was a master of the double game, a woman who viewed human life as a series of ledger entries. She had orchestrated Noah’s disappearance to create a crisis that would allow her to seize control of the hospital’s pediatric trust, a massive fund that had been stalled for years by board bureaucracy. If the boy died, the trust would be liquidated into the hospital’s general fund—her fund. But she hadn't accounted for the street girl, the "little rat," who had ruined the timing by saving the boy.

She walked through the hospital halls with an air of cold, calculated grace, her heels clicking against the marble like a countdown clock. She had already wiped the internal server logs of the park’s security cameras, a feat she managed through her deep-rooted connections in the local precinct. Everything was perfect. The girl would be convicted of kidnapping, the boy would eventually "succumb" to his injuries under her "expert care," and the merger would go through.

But she hadn't accounted for Elias.

Elias didn't go to the police. He knew the police were part of the Sterling machine. Instead, he slipped into the doctor’s office where Noah was being treated. He saw the IV bags—the ones Mrs. Sterling had personally tagged for "post-surgical recovery." He recognized the color. It was a fast-acting, synthetic sedative that, in a child of Noah’s size, would look like a natural heart failure in an autopsy.

Elias grabbed a sample of the liquid, hid it in a sterile collection vial, and walked out the back door into the rain. He knew exactly who to call. He dialed a number he’d seen on a discarded business card, a man named Marcus—a disgraced investigative reporter who had lost his career for exposing the hospital’s corruption years ago and had been living in the shadows ever since.

"I have the proof," Elias whispered into the phone, his hands shaking so violently he nearly dropped the vial. "The girl didn't take the boy. She saved him. And the woman who tried to kill him is the one who’s supposed to be saving him right now. If you don't come, he's dead by morning."
