Chapter 5 - Secrets in the Silk and Ashes

The word hung in the air like a heavy curtain.

Twin sister.

"That's impossible," I breathed, my fingers tightening around the arms of the rocking chair. "My mother would have told me. She never mentioned a sister! She never mentioned a twin!"

"Your mother fled the city twenty-four years ago during the Great Purge," Lorenzo explained, his voice low and steady as he sat on the edge of the wooden changing table near us. "Her brother—Clara’s father—was trying to seize control of the syndicate. He murdered anyone who stood in his way. Your mother was pregnant when she escaped. The syndicate always believed she lost the child."

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dragon tattoo fully visible under the dim nursery lights.

"They didn't know she was carrying twins," Lorenzo continued. "She must have left one child behind in the hospital during her escape to ensure at least one of you survived, or Clara was taken from her before she could cross the city line."

Tears pricked the back of my eyes. All those years of poverty, of watching my mother sew until her fingers bled, of moving from one cramped basement apartment to another... it wasn't just paranoia. She was hiding me from a monster.

"And Clara?" I asked quietly. "What happened to her?"

Lorenzo’s face hardened, his eyes darkening into pitch black.

"Three years ago, her father forced her to marry me to forge a truce between our families," Lorenzo said grimly. "I didn't want the marriage. She didn't want it either. But over time... we grew to respect each other. When she got pregnant with Matteo, I thought the bloodshed was finally over."

He stood up, walking toward the window that looked out over the crashing dark ocean waves.

"Nine months ago, her car exploded on the harbor bridge," he continued, his back to me. "She managed to throw Matteo out of the door into the soft embankment grass seconds before the vehicle went over the edge. We never recovered her body."

"You think she's dead?" I asked, a chill running down my spine.

Lorenzo turned his head slowly, his eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying sharpness. "Until an hour ago, I was certain of it. Now... I don't know what to believe."

Rosa knocked softly on the door frame, carrying a tray with warm soup, fresh bread, and a folded set of soft silk clothes.

"Excuse me, Mr. Moretti," Rosa said carefully. "Counselor Vance has arrived downstairs. He says it’s urgent regarding the Falcone attack at the restaurant."

At the mention of the name Vance, something clicked in my memory.

My mother’s maiden name.

"Counselor Vance?" I blurted out, standing up from the rocking chair, being careful not to disturb the sleeping infant. "Who is he?"

Lorenzo’s eyes flicked to me, a guarded expression masking his features. "Julian Vance. He is Clara’s uncle. My head legal counsel and senior advisor."

"He was my mother's brother," I realized aloud, cold sweat breaking out across my neck. "The man who tried to kill her?"

Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. He adjusted his jacket, his expression completely unreadable.

"Stay in this room, Mara," Lorenzo ordered, his tone shifting back into that of an absolute ruler. "Do not leave this floor. Rosa, lock the gallery doors behind me."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti," Rosa nodded.

Lorenzo stepped out of the room, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him.

I stood in the center of the luxurious nursery, surrounded by silk blankets and golden chandeliers, feeling more trapped than I ever had in my miserable basement apartment.

I looked down at Matteo, who was sleeping peacefully in his crib. Then I looked toward the adjoining door—a master bedroom suite that had clearly belonged to Clara.

Driven by a desperate need for answers, I stepped past Rosa, opened the connecting door, and stepped into the dark, preserved sanctuary of the ghost who shared my face.
