Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Meridian Technologies

The sun rose over the city like an executioner’s blade. By 8:00 AM, the financial news networks were saturated with breaking reports.
“Meridian Technologies CEO Daniel Sterling Arrested in Massive Multi-Million Dollar Investment Fraud Scheme.”
The ticker at the bottom of the screen scrolled through a litany of charges: wire fraud, securities manipulation, forgery, and the embezzlement of over twelve million dollars in venture capital. Footage of Vivian Vance being escorted out of the police station in handcuffs—her designer sunglasses knocked askew by an aggressive cameraman—dominated the morning talk shows.
I sat at the kitchen island, sipping black coffee while scrolling through the fallout. The six business partners who had sat at our table the night before—men who had laughed as caesar dressing dripped from my hair—were now scrambling to distance themselves from the wreckage. Two of them had already retained criminal defense attorneys of their own, realizing that their due diligence failures during the funding rounds were going to be heavily scrutinized by federal regulators.
My phone, which I had turned back on at dawn, was vibrating incessantly. Emails from board members, text messages from distant acquaintances pretending they “always knew Daniel was shady,” and missed calls from the corporate PR firm hired to manage Meridian’s public image.
I deleted them all.
At 10:00 AM, a sharp knock echoed through the front porch. I opened the door to find Arthur Sterling standing on the mat, holding a thick leather briefcase and a box of fresh pastries from the bakery down the street.
"Morning, Claire," Arthur said, a grim yet approving smile playing on his lips. He stepped inside, placing the box on the counter. "The federal prosecutors are officially moving forward with a fast-track indictment. They want to set an example with Meridian. Corporate fraud of this scale using fabricated medical tech is political poison right now."
"How is the asset recovery looking?" I asked, pouring him a cup of coffee.
"Better than expected," Arthur said, pulling out a sheaf of legal documents and spreading them across the kitchen island. "Because you filed the forensic flag three days before the arrest, the courts recognized your primary ownership of this property immediately. The fraudulent deed transfer has been nullified. The house is 100% yours, free and clear of any encumbrances."
He looked up at me, his eyes softening. "Your father would have been damn proud of you, Claire. You handled this with the precision of a master auditor."
"I learned from the best," I replied, tracing the rim of my mug. "What happens next?"

"The depositions begin next week. Daniel’s defense team is going to try and pin the entire operation on Vivian, claiming she was the mastermind and he was just a figurehead. Meanwhile, Vivian’s lawyers are already drafting motions claiming Daniel forged her signature on the shell corporation documents."
Arthur chuckled darkly. "They’re going to turn on each other like starved wolves in a cage. And you’re going to be sitting in the front row as the star witness."
