Chapter 6 - The Arrest of Brenda Swift

The news of Evelyn’s arrest for witness intimidation sent shockwaves through the family, but the real drama was unfolding five miles away at the Swift family residence on Maple Street.
While I remained monitored in the ICU, Detective Alvarez’s team executed the arrest warrant for Brenda.
According to the police report I received later, Brenda had barricaded herself inside her upstairs bedroom when the police cruisers arrived. She refused to open the door, screaming that she had "done nothing wrong" and that "that gold-digging bitch is making everything up!"
Jacob, who had driven to the house after being kicked out of my hospital room, stood on the front lawn as officers kicked the front door open.
"Brenda! Just come out!" Jacob wept, pacing the driveway. "If you didn't do it, just talk to the police! Tell them it was a mistake!"
"Shut up, Jacob!" Brenda screamed from the second-floor window. "You spineless coward! You let that woman destroy our family! She manipulated you into believing she was pregnant with twins! She’s trying to steal Grandpa’s inheritance!"
"She is carrying twins, Brenda!" Jacob yelled back, his voice breaking. "The doctors confirmed it! Why did you lock her out on the balcony?!"
"Because she deserved it!" Brenda howled, losing her composure completely. "She was sitting in our kitchen acting like a queen while Mom and I did all the real work! She needed to know her place! I wanted her to lose those damn babies!"
The entire neighborhood was out on their porches, watching the scene unfold. Two neighbors pulled out their smartphones, recording the breakdown in high definition.
Moments later, three officers marched Brenda down the front steps in handcuffs. She was kicking, spitting, and cursing, her hair a wild mess, her eyes bulging with unhinged fury.
"You'll pay for this, Jacob!" Brenda shrieked as she was shoved into the back of the police cruiser. "She's going to leave you! She's going to take everything and leave you with nothing! You betrayed your own sister for a stranger!"
As the police car pulled away, its red and blue lights flashing against the snow-covered street, Jacob collapsed onto the cold pavement of the driveway, burying his face in his hands, sobbing hysterically.
He had spent years turning a blind eye to Brenda’s cruelty, brushing it off as "just how Brenda is." He had forced me to endure her subtle insults, her passive-aggressive sabotages, and her open disdain, all to keep the peace in his precious family.
And now, the peace was gone. His sister was in handcuffs, his mother was in a holding cell, and his wife was in the ICU fighting to save his unborn sons.
Back at the hospital, my condition suddenly took a sharp turn for the worse.
At 4:15 AM, the fetal heart monitors attached to my belly began to emit an erratic, terrifying blare.
Dr. Chen and a team of four nurses rushed into the room.
"Her blood pressure is plummeting!" a nurse shouted. "Fetal heart rate on Twin B dropped to sixty! We have acute placental abruption!"
Dr. Chen looked at the monitor, then looked at me. "Mrs. Swift, the trauma from the hypothermia and the chemical exposure has caused the placenta to detach. We cannot wait any longer. We have to do an emergency C-section right now."
"I'm only twenty-eight weeks..." I sobbed, terror seizing my heart. "Will they survive?!"
"We have the NICU team standing by," Dr. Chen said, pushing my gurney out of the ICU and down the bright, sterile hallway toward the operating theater. "We're going to do everything in our power to save your boys. Stay with me, Helen!"

As the double doors of the surgical suite swung open, I looked up at the harsh round lights above.
Fight, my sweet boys, I prayed with every fiber of my soul. Fight like your mother did on that cold balcony.
