Chapter 6 - The Siege of Cicero

The abandoned meatpacking plant on the western edge of Cicero looked like a fortress of rust and shadows against the pre-dawn sky.
High chain-link fences topped with coils of barbed wire surrounded the perimeter. Armed lookouts huddled inside guard towers, smoking cigarettes against the biting morning chill, completely unaware of the doom creeping silently through the weeds toward them.
Inside the main processing floor, Julian Rossi sat at a metal folding table, counting stacks of damp counterfeit bills under a harsh, swinging yellow work light. He was a thick-necked, brutal man with a jagged scar running from his ear down to his collarbone—a souvenir from the warehouse war five years ago.
“Boss,” one of his jittery lieutenants burst through the office door, out of breath. “We got a problem. The South Side crew hasn't checked in. And... and there are black SUVs blocking both ends of Industrial Parkway.”
Julian looked up, his eyes narrowing. “Black SUVs? Whose?”
Before the lieutenant could answer, the heavy steel loading bay doors at the end of the plant didn't just open—they were blown off their hinges by a synchronized breaching charge.
BOOM!
The concussive shockwave rattled the corrugated metal walls, sending dust and rust raining down from the ceiling.
Before the smoke could even clear, a wall of tactical operators wearing black body armor and night-vision goggles surged into the facility like an unstoppable tide, their submachine guns barking in unison.
Rat-tat-tat-tat!
Julian’s guards didn't even have time to unholster their weapons. They dropped like felled timber, caught in a merciless crossfire that left no room for escape.
And right down the center of the smoking, chaotic killing floor, walking with slow, terrifying deliberation, was me.
I wore my signature black overcoat, my collar turned up against the chill, my hands tucked casually into my pockets. Beside me marched Marcus and a dozen elite enforcers, clearing every corner with ruthless, surgical precision.
“What is this?!” Julian Rossi shrieked, stumbling out of his office with a desperate look in his eyes, brandishing a chrome-plated desert eagle. “Who the hell do you think you are?!”
He blinked through the acrid gunpowder smoke, finally recognizing the tall, imposing figure walking toward him through the carnage. His color drained instantly.
“V-Vance...?” Julian stammered, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped his gun. “How... how did you find us?!”
“You sent your men to hurt a little girl and a defenseless woman in my city, Julian,” I said, my voice carrying clearly over the dying echoes of gunfire. I stopped twenty feet away from him, my dark eyes boring straight into his soul. “Did you really think I wouldn't notice?”
“She’s my half-sister!” Julian yelled defensively, backing up against the metal table, sweating profusely. “She had no business living in my old sector! She deserved to learn a lesson!”
“She’s under my protection,” I replied coldly. “Which means touching her was a death sentence.”
Julian raised his Desert Eagle, screaming in blind panic, and pulled the trigger.
Click.
The gun was empty. He had forgotten to reload in the chaos.
With a blur of motion, I drew my Sig Sauer and fired a single shot.
Crack.
The bullet struck the concrete floor half an inch from Julian’s left boot, sending sparks flying. Julian shrieked, losing his balance, and fell hard onto his backside among the scattered stacks of counterfeit cash.
Marcus and two enforcers rushed forward, hauling Julian up by his arms and slamming him face-first against the metal table.
I walked up slowly, looking down at the broken, whimpering animal who had once fancied himself a kingpin.
“You wanted my attention, Julian,” I said softly, pressing the barrel of my gun gently against the base of his skull. “You have it. Now... tell me everything you know about the syndicate remants hiding out in New York. Because if you lie to me even once, I won't kill you quickly.”
May you like
Julian sobbed, his bravado entirely evaporated. “I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything! Just don't kill me!”
The empire of fear had spoken. And there was nowhere left for the rats to hide.
