Chapter 7 - The Final Legal Reckoning
The fitness and permanent guardianship hearing on Monday morning was less of a legal debate and more of an absolute dismantling of Victoria Vance’s character and defense.
Arthur Sterling attempted to present character witnesses—associates from high-society circles who claimed Victoria was merely a misunderstood victim of grief. But their testimony crumbled the moment Assistant Attorney General Vance introduced intercepted phone recordings from the Cook County detention facility.
The courtroom speakers crackled to life, broadcasting Victoria’s recorded voice loud and clear:
“...I don't care about the brats! Just get those offshore transfer codes cleared before the federal auditors freeze my personal jewelry lockers! If I have to ditch them at the airport to save my portfolio, I’d do it again!”
A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.
Judge Carter’s face turned into a mask of pure judicial fury. She turned her gaze toward the defense table, where Sterling sat looking as though he wanted the mahogany floor to open up and swallow him whole.
“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Carter said, her voice trembling with restrained anger. “Is that your client’s voice?”
“The defense... the defense has no further statements to submit, Your Honor,” Sterling whispered, immediately dropping his briefcase papers onto the table.
“Good,” Judge Carter replied sharply.
She picked up her pen, signed the final decree, and stamped it with a heavy, definitive thud.
“The court finds Victoria Vance guilty of felony grand theft, financial fraud, and malicious child abandonment. She is sentenced to twelve years in a state correctional facility with no possibility of parole. Furthermore, all remaining assets recovered from her offshore accounts are hereby ordered transferred into the unconditional, irrevocable trust funds of Owen and Lily Vance.”
The judge looked up from her bench, her expression softening as she met Jonathan’s steady gaze in the gallery.
“And with regard to the petition for permanent adoption and legal guardianship...”
She raised the second document.

The courtroom erupted into quiet applause. Major Hayes, sitting in the front row, let out a loud, undisguised cheer that earned him a mild warning tap from the bailiff, though even the bailiff was smiling.
