Chapter 5 - Discovery and Exposure

Damian didn't burst into the library.
Instead, he grabbed my wrist, pulling me silently down the dark hallway toward the private service elevator. We rode it up in total silence, the soft hum of the cables masking the storm brewing behind us.
Once we were safely inside the master suite, Damian locked the heavy oak door with a deadbolt, sliding a steel security bar into place. He turned around, leaning back against the wood, his breathing slightly elevated from the exertion.
"You heard them," Damian stated, his voice flat, devoid of emotion.
"I... yes," I confessed, my hands trembling as I clutched the edge of the mahogany desk. "Mr. Volkov, Salvatore said he arranged the poison. They're plotting against you. You have to call the police—or security—"
A harsh, bitter laugh cut me off.
"The police?" Damian shook his head, stepping closer to me. The raw, imposing aura of the crime boss filled the room, swallowing the oxygen. "Clara, the police in this city are on my payroll or terrified of my shadow. In my world, laws don't exist. Only leverage and blood."
"Then let me leave," I pleaded, stepping back. "Please. Take Lila and let us go back to Queens. We don't want your money, we don't want your secrets. We just want to be safe."
Damian stopped. He looked at me—truly looked at me—for a long, searing moment.
"You think you can walk away from Grayhaven House now?" Damian asked quietly. "Salvatore knows someone was lingering in the hallway tonight. If he suspects you heard them, your life isn't worth a broken penny. And neither is your daughter's."
Terror paralyzed my lungs. "You... you brought us into the middle of a war."
"I brought you into my home because for the first time in eight years, I didn't feel like a monster when I looked in the mirror," Damian snapped, his voice rising, raw with suppressed agony and fury. He closed the distance between us, his large hands gripping the edge of the desk on either side of me, trapping me in his space. "Salvatore thinks I'm dying. He thinks he can carve up my empire while I rot in this bed."

Damian reached out, his calloused fingertips gently brushing against my cheek, wiping away a stray tear I hadn't realized was falling. His touch was shockingly tender for a man whose hands had ended lives.
"Help me, Clara," Damian whispered, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch. "Help me finish this. And I swear to you on my mother's grave—no one will ever lay a finger on you or Lila as long as I breathe."
