Chapter 4 - Freezing the Assets

By 8:00 a.m. the following morning, the financial world of the Whittaker family exploded.

Richard Whittaker was released on a temporary two-million-dollar bond, paid for by his corporate credit line. He arrived at the glass headquarters of Whittaker Chemical in downtown Chicago, flanked by two corporate defense lawyers, intending to hold an emergency board meeting to assert control.

He never made it past the lobby.

As Richard stepped toward the executive elevators, two security guards blocked his path. Beside them stood Julian Mercer, holding a certified federal injunction order signed by a state magistrate at dawn.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Richard bellowed, his face red with humiliation as dozens of his employees watched from the lobby coffee shop. "I am the CEO of this company!"

"Correction, Mr. Whittaker," Julian said smoothly, stepping forward and handing a copy of the injunction to Richard’s lead lawyer. "You were the managing director under the Vance-Whittaker Family Trust. As of 6:00 a.m. today, Miss Nora Vance-Whittaker has exercised her right of total asset reclamation due to severe breach of fiduciary duty and felony physical endangerment."

Richard’s lawyer glanced at the court order, his eyes widening in horror. "Richard... this is a master freeze. All corporate accounts, your personal accounts, the lines of credit... they’ve been locked by the probate court."

"What?!" Richard screamed, pulling out his black American Express card and shoving it at Julian. "That's impossible! I built this firm!"

"Your late wife built this firm," Julian corrected coldly. "You were merely a trustee who forgot your place. As of right now, your personal credit cards are revoked, your company car has been repossessed in the parking garage, and the locks on the Whittaker Mansion are currently being changed."

At that exact moment, Richard’s phone buzzed violently. He snatched it up, answering on speaker mode in his panic.

It was Evelyn, shrieking so loudly her voice carried across the entire lobby.

"RICHARD! WHERE ARE YOU?!" Evelyn wailed. "THE BOUTIQUE CARDS ARE DECLINED! THE SPA JUST THREW ME OUT! AND THERE ARE THREE TOW TRUCKS AT THE HOUSE HOOKING UP THE MERCEDES AND THE BENTLEY!"

"Evelyn, shut up!" Richard yelled into the phone, sweating profusely through his thousand-dollar suit.

"DON'T YOU TELL ME TO SHUT UP!" Evelyn screamed back. "THE ELECTRIC COMPANY JUST SENT A NOTICE THAT THE MANSION POWER WILL BE CUT OFF BY NOON! NORA FROZE EVERYTHING! DO SOMETHING, YOU USELESS OLD MAN!"

The call cut off.

Richard stood in the center of his own lobby, his chest heaving, surrounded by whispered rumors from his staff. His prestige, his authority, his illusion of wealth—all of it had evaporated in less than twenty-four hours.

Julian leaned in close to Richard, his voice dropping to a low, razor-sharp whisper.

"Nora sends her regards, Richard. She suggested you check the local shelters. After all... spare parts don't get bedrooms."
