Chapter 9 - The Fall of Blackwood Manor

The dawn broke over the horizon, painting the eastern sky in soft shades of orange, rose, and gold.

Violet, Julian, and Maeve stood on the grassy hill overlooking the valley. Where the imposing, terrifying silhouette of Blackwood Manor had stood for two centuries, there was now only a deep, quiet clearing surrounded by ancient pine trees. The mist was clearing, carrying away the lingering scent of stone and dried lavender, replaced by the crisp, clean morning air.

Julian stood beside Violet, his hand firmly wrapped around hers. His tux was torn, his face smudged with soot and blood, but his eyes were bright, clear, and free for the first time in his life.

"It's gone," Julian murmured, looking at the empty valley. "The fortune, the estate, the legacy... everything my family hoarded at the expense of human lives."

"Good riddance," Violet said softly, leaning her head against his shoulder. She looked down at her feet, taking a deep breath of the cool morning wind, feeling the solid, living earth beneath her soles.

Maeve walked up to them, holding a simple leather sack containing the ancient journals and her grandmother’s silver vial.

"The bloodline is cleansed," Maeve said, looking at Julian and Violet with a gentle smile. "The land belongs to the forest again. My ancestors can finally rest."

"What will you do now, Maeve?" Violet asked, stepping forward to embrace the younger girl.

Maeve looked out toward the open road leading away from the valley. "I’m going to travel. I want to see what the world looks like outside the shadow of this mountain." She paused, looking at Julian. "And you two?"

Julian pulled a small brass key from his pocket—the key to a small, modest seaside cottage in coastal Maine that he had secretly purchased years ago under a fake name, dreaming of a life far away from his mother’s control.

"We are going to start over," Julian said, looking into Violet’s eyes with absolute devotion. "No mansions. No secrets. No pedestals."

Violet took the brass key from his hand, tossing it up in the air and catching it with a bright, joyful laugh that echoed across the quiet valley.

"Let's go home, Julian," she said.
