Chapter 5 - Justice in the Spotlight

Within twenty minutes of Maya’s bombshell revelation, the flashing lights of police cruisers and ambulance sirens began to paint the rain-slicked pavement outside in rotating bars of crimson and blue. The storm outside seemed to match the chaotic energy surging through the grand hotel.

Two city police officers, accompanied by a female paramedic, pushed their way through the massive oak doors of the ballroom. The contrast between the rain-soaked uniforms of the authorities and the opulent, glittering attire of the guests was jarring.

All eyes turned toward the entrance, then back to the altar where Leo still stood alongside Maya and the infant.

"Officer," Leo called out, raising his hand to catch the attention of the lead detective. "Over here."

The detective, a weathered man with a tired expression and a yellow slicker, navigated the sea of silk and expensive shoes. He stopped at the edge of the white carpet, taking in the bizarre scene: the ruined wedding, the weeping bride on the floor, the homeless child wrapped in a designer shawl, and the infant cradled safely in the groom's arms.

"Mr. Vance, I presume?" the detective asked, glancing down at the hospital band and the tiny birthmark. "We received multiple emergency calls from guests inside. Dispatch also picked up three livestreams. Care to tell me what’s going on?"

"I’m reporting an attempted abandonment and child endangerment," Leo said clearly, his voice carrying across the silent, listening room. He pointed a steady finger directly at Victoria, who was now being helped to her feet by her weeping mother. "That woman right there—Victoria Hayes—abandoned my newborn daughter behind the dumpsters of St. Jude's Hospital on Tuesday night at eleven-thirty-eight."

The detective turned his gaze toward Victoria, his expression hardening. He signaled to his partner, who immediately moved across the room, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Victoria Hayes?" the officer asked, stepping in front of the bride. "You need to come with us down to the precinct to answer a few questions regarding the endangerment of a minor."

"This is an outrage! My father is—" Harrison Hayes started, lunging forward, but the second officer simply stepped into his path, placing a hand firmly on his holster.

"Your father-in-law's money doesn't buy you out of a felony, Mr. Hayes," the detective said flatly. He looked at Victoria, whose elaborate lace veil caught on a silver button of her dress as the handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists. The sound was sharp, definitive, and final.

As Victoria was led down the white carpet—her muddy trail now crossing paths with Maya's footprints—she didn't look at her father, and she didn't look at the guests who turned their faces away in disgust. For one brief second, her eyes met Leo's.

There was no pity in his gaze. Only an immense, sorrowful emptiness.
