Chapter 7 - The Master of Shadows

The foyer turned into a violent bottleneck of gunfire and concrete dust.

Gabriel’s marine security team breached the heavy front oak doors, their tactical lights cutting through the thick smoke, overwhelming Everett’s remaining mercenaries with professional precision.

Within four minutes, the gunfire died down.

The remaining mercenaries lay disarmed or unconscious on the floor.

I vaulted over the overturned mahogany desk near the foyer entrance, searching for Everett.

A trail of dark blood led toward the basement wine cellar—the very room Delphine had drawn on little Wren’s pad.

“He’s hit!” Marcus yelled, coming up beside me, his rifle raised. “I caught him in the shoulder during the breach!”

We moved down the cold stone stairs into the cavernous cellar, where thousands of expensive wine bottles lined the brick walls.

At the far end of the vault, sitting on an oak barrel, was Everett Roan.

His tuxedo jacket was soaked in dark red blood near his left shoulder. His revolver sat uselessly on the floor three feet away from his boots. He looked up as Marcus and I approached, his breathing heavy and ragged.

“You were... always a sharp boy, Damian,” Everett rasped, coughing weakly. “Your father... he didn't have the stomach for what was necessary. He wanted to make this family legitimate. He wanted to give up the power...”

“My father trusted you,” I said, stepping up to him, my gun trained directly on his chest. “He gave you a home, a life, and his complete trust. And you murdered him.”

Everett let out a wet, bitter laugh. “I made this empire! While your father played the respectable billionaire, I ran the shadows! I earned every dollar in those offshore accounts!”

“You starved a little boy in a dark room in Queens,” Marcus growled, stepping forward, his knuckles white as he gripped his rifle. “You’re not a king, Everett. You’re just a rat who lived in my father’s basement for too long.”

Everett looked at the two of us—the two brothers he had spent fifteen years keeping apart with lies and paranoia.

“It doesn't matter,” Everett whispered, a sinister grin touching his bloodied lips. “The financial transfer triggers at midnight. The offshore accounts automatically dissolve into an encrypted private trust in Panama. You’ll never recover the family assets...”

I pulled my phone from my pocket and held up the screen.

The screen displayed a green confirmation checkmark: TRANSFER CANCELLED - MASTER KEY ACCEPTED.

Everett’s smile vanished. “How...?”

“The black dot note,” I revealed softly. “It wasn't just a signal. It contained a micro-dot security cipher that Marcus printed on the paper. When I pocketed it under the table, my phone scanned the encryption. We bypassed your Panama firewall twenty minutes ago.”

Everett stared at the phone screen, his eyes hollow, realizing that every thread of his grand, decades-long conspiracy had been unraveled.

The heavy footsteps of NYPD tactical officers echoed down the basement stairs, led by Gabriel and the district attorney.

“Everett Roan,” the lead captain announced, pointing his weapon at the bleeding man. “You are under arrest for kidnapping, extortion, conspiracy, and grand larceny.”

Everett dropped his head back against the brick wall, closing his eyes as the hand-cuffs clicked around his wrists.

The reign of the shadow master was over.
