Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece of Marino Manor

One year later.
The grand ballroom of the Marino estate was filled with light, music, and the quiet murmur of two hundred esteemed guests.
The estate had completely transformed. The heavy, intimidating coldness of the old mafia residence had been replaced by a warm, breathtaking elegance. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, silk drapes dressed the high arched windows, and white orchids filled every corner of the grand room.
It was the night of the annual Marino Children’s Foundation Gala—a newly established non-profit organization founded by Elena and funded by the Marino family, dedicated to providing shelter, legal aid, and medical care for victims of domestic abuse across the state.
Standing near the grand staircase, looking breathtaking in a floor-length dress of deep emerald silk, was Elena.
Her hair was styled in soft, elegant waves, her skin was radiant, and her eyes held a brilliant, joyful light. She wore simple diamond earrings and the brilliant rose-gold wedding band that had never left her finger since their private ceremony six months ago.
Beside her stood Chloe.
At thirteen, Chloe had grown taller, her face blooming with the confidence and grace of a young girl who knew she was cherished. She wore a beautiful dark blue dress, her charcoal drawings displayed proudly on the gallery wall of the ballroom, where patrons were bidding thousands of dollars to support her mother's foundation.
"Look at them bidding on my fountain drawing, Mom," Chloe whispered, grinning from ear to ear. "It's up to five thousand dollars!"
Elena laughed softly, kissing her daughter's forehead. "Because it's a masterpiece, baby. Just like you."
"Ahem."
A quiet, deep cough sounded behind them.
They turned.
Luca walked over to them, dressed in an immaculate charcoal tuxedo. He looked powerful, noble, and strikingly handsome. But when his gaze landed on Elena, his stern face softened instantly into a look of absolute, breathtaking tenderness.
He wrapped his long arm around Elena’s waist, pulling her flush against his side, while placing his other hand affectionately on Chloe’s shoulder.
"The mayor just gave a speech in the main hall," Luca murmured into Elena’s ear, his hot breath sending shivers down her spine. "He called you the heart of Chicago."
"I'm not the heart of Chicago," Elena smiled, turning in his arms to rest her hands against his broad chest. "I'm just the heart of this house."
"You are the heart of everything I am," Luca whispered softly, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss against her lips.
Chloe made a dramatic gagging face, though her eyes were shining with pure happiness. "Eww! Stop kissing in front of the donors!"
Luca pulled back, letting out a rare, booming laugh that echoed through the ballroom, making several high-society guests turn and smile at the happy family.
"Come, small one," Luca said, offering his arm to Chloe with grand formality. "Let us go check on the auction for your fountain drawing. If the bidding stays under ten thousand, I will have to buy it myself."
"You can't buy it, Luca, that's cheating!" Chloe giggled, taking his arm as they walked toward the gallery wall.
Elena walked beside them, slipping her hand into Luca’s free hand, her fingers intertwining tightly with his.
As they walked through the bright, music-filled ballroom together, Elena looked out through the high glass doors at the peaceful, moonlit grounds of the estate.
