Chapter 9 - The Blue Dress

Two weeks later, the private dining room at Romano’s restaurant was closed to the public.
A single candle burned low between two wine glasses—one empty, one full, condensation sliding down its side in the warm, cozy air of the restaurant. The ordinary noise of the city hummed softly outside the large plate-glass windows, untouched by the silent war that had been fought and won in the dark docks of the harbor.
At the corner table by the window sat Vincent Torino.
He was wearing his good charcoal suit. His hair was neatly combed, his expression relaxed in a way the waiters had never seen before.
The door of the restaurant chimed softly.
Vincent looked up.
Elena walked in, holding Sophie’s hand. She was wearing a stunning, floor-length sapphire-blue dress that caught the restaurant's warm lighting like liquid silk. The bruises along her jaw had completely faded, leaving behind her natural, striking beauty. Sophie wore a matching little blue dress, clutching a brand-new doll in her other arm.
Vincent stood up immediately, stepping away from the table to meet them.
“You look breathtaking,” Vincent said softly, his dark eyes softening as he looked at Elena.
Elena smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. “You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Torino. Though I have to say... your choice of first-date venues is a little dramatic.”
“Next time,” Vincent promised, gently taking her hand and pressing a light, respectful kiss to her knuckles, “we’ll go to a museum. Much quieter.”
Sophie tugged on the hem of Vincent’s jacket, looking up at him with wide, serious eyes. “Did you bring Mama’s blue dress back like you promised?”
Vincent crouched down to her eye level, pulling a small, beautifully wrapped velvet box from his jacket pocket and handing it to her. “I did better than that, sweetheart. That dress belonged to yesterday. Today is a brand new start.”
Sophie opened the box to reveal a delicate silver charm bracelet featuring a small, glittering silver heart. Her eyes lit up, and without warning, she threw her arms around Vincent’s neck, burying her face against his shoulder.
Vincent froze for a fraction of a second, completely unaccustomed to such unvarnished, innocent affection. Then, slowly, his strong arms came up to wrap around the little girl, holding her close.
He looked up, meeting Elena’s gaze across Sophie’s shoulder.
The empty chair across from him wasn't empty anymore. The candle was burning bright, casting a warm, golden glow over a future neither of them had expected to find.

“Shall we order?” Vincent asked softly, offering Elena his arm.
“We should,” Elena smiled, slipping her hand into the crook of his elbow. “After all... we have a lot of time to make up for.”
