Chapter 5 - The Council of Shadows

Two weeks after Marco Ricci’s disappearance, the underground empire of Chicago faced a seismic shift.
In a secure subterranean vault located beneath an abandoned meatpacking plant on the city's west side, the heads of the five major crime syndicates had gathered in emergency session.
At the center of the mahogany table sat Nikolai Volkov—the ruthless, silver-haired boss of the Russian Bratva, a man who controlled half the drug trade across the Midwest and had been quietly funding Marco Ricci’s betrayal behind the scenes.
Volkov slammed a heavy glass of vodka onto the table, his cold blue eyes glaring at the empty seat at the head of the room.
"Where is Marchetti?" Volkov barked, his thick Russian accent cutting through the smoky air like a razor. "We called a mandatory council meeting forty-eight hours ago! Does the great king of Chicago think he is above the rules now?"
Across the table, an Italian capo named Salvatore shifted uncomfortably in his seat. "Relax, Nikolai. Word is Dante has been... distracted lately. Family matters."
"Family matters?" Volkov sneered, laughing darkly. "His underboss, Marco Ricci, vanishes into thin air. His operations in Queens are restructured overnight. And now he thinks he can ignore the council? If Marchetti is showing weakness, it’s time we carved up his territory before someone else does."
"You want to carve up my territory, Nikolai?"
The iron doors at the end of the vault hissed open with a hydraulic thud.
The room went dead silent.
Dante Marchetti walked into the vault. He wasn't alone. Behind him walked Tony and four heavily armed capos holding suppressed automatic rifles. And walking directly at Dante's heel, stepping with the slow, terrifying confidence of an executioner, was Bruno.
Volkov stiffened, his hand dropping instinctively toward the custom pistol holstered beneath his suit jacket. "Dante. You finally decided to grace us with your presence. We were just discussing your... recent management changes."
Dante pulled out the chair at the head of the table and sat down slowly. He didn't smile. He didn't offer a greeting. He simply rested his elbows on the polished wood, interlaced his fingers, and stared straight into Volkov’s eyes.
"You lost a very good asset when Marco disappeared, didn't you, Nikolai?" Dante asked smoothly.
Volkov’s jaw tightened, but he held his ground. "I don't know what you're talking about. Marco was your man."
"Was," Dante agreed, his voice icy. "Past tense. Just like the ledgers he was stealing for you. Just like the shipments you thought were going unmonitored through the Eleventh Street docks."
A murmur rippled through the other syndicate bosses around the table. They looked nervously between Dante and Volkov.
"You have no proof of—" Volkov started, standing up half out of his chair.
"I have a confession recorded in Marco’s own voice before he took a very permanent, very deep dive into the East River," Dante interrupted, his voice cutting off any further lies. "And I have your bank routing numbers sitting on the tablet in front of my captain right now."
Volkov’s face turned an ugly shade of crimson. He realized in that exact instant that he had been completely outplayed. All his plotting, all his secret alliances with Marco—Dante had known about it all along.
"You arrogant bastard," Volkov hissed, pulling his pistol from his holster and slamming it onto the table, pointing it straight at Dante’s chest. "You think you can walk in here and threaten me in my own city?!"
Before Volkov’s finger could even twitch toward the trigger, Bruno moved.
In a fraction of a second, the 120-pound mastiff vaulted across the length of the mahogany table with terrifying, explosive speed. He didn't bark. He didn't hesitate.
CRASH!
Bruno slammed directly into Volkov’s chest, knocking the Russian boss backward out of his chair and sending him crashing hard onto the concrete floor!
Volkov’s gun went skittering across the room. Before the Russian could even draw another breath, Bruno’s heavy jaws clamped down around Volkov’s right wrist, pinning his arm flat against the floor with bone-crushing pressure.
SNAP.
A sickening crunch echoed through the vault, followed instantly by Volkov letting out a blood-curdling scream of pure agony.
"AARRGH! GET IT OFF ME! GET THIS DEMON OFF ME!" Volkov shrieked, clawing frantically at the floor with his left hand while blood drained from his face.
Dante stood up slowly from his chair, buttoning his suit jacket. He walked around the table, stopping directly over the writhing Russian boss.
He looked down at Volkov with cold, absolute detachment.
"You tried to buy my men. You tried to steal my city," Dante said softly, leaning down so only Volkov could hear him. "And worst of all... you partnered with the man who killed an innocent little girl."
Dante raised his hand, gesturing slightly to Bruno.
The mastiff immediately released Volkov’s mangled wrist, stepping back two paces, his teeth still bared, his dark eyes watching the Russian like a hawk waiting to finish its kill.
Volkov clutched his broken arm, sobbing tears of pain and utter defeat, looking up at the other crime bosses around the table for help.

Not a single man moved. Every single boss sat frozen in terror, realizing that crossing Dante Marchetti—and his terrifying dog—meant a death sentence.
"This meeting is adjourned," Dante announced, turning toward the exit. "The Russian territory from the river north to the county line now belongs to the Marchetti family. Anyone who has a problem with that can speak to my dog."
