Chapter 10 - The Desperate Strike

Three years after the scandal shattered the Calder family, Eleanor Calder sat in the high-ceilinged library of her temporary rental home in Bellevue—a house a fraction of the size of the grand estate she had lost to federal asset forfeiture.
Though her corporate empire had collapsed and her social standing had been pulverized in the court of public opinion, Eleanor’s narcissism remained incurable. She could not accept that a woman from a modest, working-class background—a woman she had spent six years treating like hired help—had dismantled her family, taken her granddaughter, and built an internationally acclaimed charitable foundation.
Using the last of an offshore account in the Cayman Islands that federal auditors had missed, Eleanor hired Thomas Sterling, a disgraced former prosecutor turned predatory civil attorney known for launching scorched-earth media lawsuits.
Their target wasn't just Mallory; it was The Shield for Children, Mallory’s foundation.
Sterling filed a thirty-million-dollar civil suit in federal court, alleging that Mallory had engaged in tortious interference, slander, and civil conversion. The lawsuit claimed that Mallory had used "stolen internal Calder Global documents" to fabricate the narrative surrounding Hudson and the Poppy Legacy Trust, intentionally destroying the Calder family’s multi-million-dollar commercial reputation for personal financial gain.
To amplify the damage, Sterling leaked the filing to national tabloid news outlets, attempting to ignite a media circus right as Mallory’s foundation was preparing to open its third emergency shelter in Los Angeles.
The press headlines were immediate and sharp: HERO OR HOAX? CALDER FAMILY ACCUSES FOUNDER OF FABRICATING CHILD ABUSE SCANDAL.
Mallory sat at the long conference table in Nora Ellis’s law office, holding a copy of the lawsuit. Marcus Vance sat beside her, his tablet connected to the wall screen, while Nora paced the room with a cold, focused expression.
"They think if they throw enough dirt, some of it will stick," Nora said, turning to Mallory. "Sterling wants a public spectacle. He’s banking on the idea that your corporate sponsors will panic over the negative publicity and pull their funding before the trial even starts."
Mallory set the paper down calmly. Three years ago, a headline like that would have sent her into a spiral of anxiety. Today, it barely raised her pulse.
"Has a single sponsor pulled out, Nora?" Mallory asked smoothly.
"Not one," Nora smiled faintly. "In fact, two major tech executives called this morning offering to double their pledge to cover our legal fees."
"Good," Mallory said. Then she turned to Marcus. "What did you find on Sterling and the Cayman account?"
Marcus tapped his screen, bringing up a complex financial transaction map. "Eleanor thought she was clever. She funnelled two hundred thousand dollars through three shell companies registered in Nevis to pay Sterling’s retainer. But she committed wire fraud in the process. The money she used wasn't her private savings—it was drawn from a dormant subsidiary line of credit that was explicitly listed in her federal bankruptcy freeze."
Mallory leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "So she broke her federal bail conditions?"
"She didn't just break them; she shattered them," Marcus said. "I’ve already shared the bank logs with the Department of Justice’s Financial Crimes Division. The United States Attorney signed a felony arrest warrant an hour ago."
Two days later, Thomas Sterling called a press conference on the steps of the federal courthouse, flanked by microphones from every major network.
"My client, Mrs. Eleanor Calder, stands here today to reclaim her family’s honorable name from a calculated smear campaign—" Sterling announced into the microphones.
Before he could finish his sentence, two black unmarked SUVs pulled up to the curb. Four federal marshals stepped out, pushing through the stunned crowd of reporters.
The lead marshal walked straight up the steps, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Eleanor Calder," the marshal announced loudly, his voice picked up by every news microphone. "You are under arrest for federal bail violation, bankruptcy fraud, and wire fraud."
Eleanor, wearing a fur coat and pearl necklace, froze in absolute horror. "This is an outrage! Do you know who I am?!"
May you like
"We know exactly who you are, Mrs. Calder," the marshal replied coldly, clicking the handcuffs tightly around her wrists in front of dozens of flashing news cameras.
The footage aired live across the nation. Thomas Sterling stood speechless on the courthouse steps as his client was shoved into the back of a federal vehicle, her final attempt at revenge ending in total, irreversible public humiliation.
