Chapter 8 - The Voice in the Garden

Three months later.

The winter snows had melted, leaving the gardens of the Caruso estate lush, green, and bursting with early spring tulips. The morning sun cast a bright, golden light across the high stone walls.

The Moretti syndicate was no more. Following the botched raid on the Caruso estate, federal prosecutors—supplied with an overwhelming mountain of evidence provided directly by Vincenzo's legal team—had arrested every high-ranking member of the Moretti family. Dominic and Matteo were currently serving thirty-year sentences in a maximum-security federal facility.

On the grand back patio of the estate, a long wooden table was set for breakfast.

Vincenzo sat at the head of the table, reading the morning newspaper, a cup of hot espresso in his hand. For the first time in three years, the harsh, dark lines around his eyes had smoothed out. He looked ten years younger.

The glass patio doors slid open.

Arya walked out into the sunshine, wearing a bright yellow sundress and canvas sneakers. She was holding a leather leash in her right hand.

Beside her, walking with a slow, proud, rhythmic gait, was Bear. His fur had grown back completely over his ribs, thick and lustrous in the morning light. The jagged scar across his shoulders remained—a badge of honor that marked him not as a fighting dog, but as a guardian.

"Good morning, Dad," Arya said cheerfully, stepping up to the table and kissing Vincenzo’s cheek.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Vincenzo smiled, setting his paper down. "How did you sleep?"

"Great," Arya said, taking her seat across from him and pouring a glass of orange juice. "Bear woke me up early because he wanted to chase the squirrels by the fountain."

Bear trotted over to Vincenzo’s chair, resting his massive head directly on the mafia boss’s knee. Vincenzo didn't pull away. He reached down with his hand, smiling as he scratched the giant dog behind his ears, letting Bear slobber slightly onto his custom Italian wool trousers.

"He earned those squirrels," Vincenzo said softly.

Marco walked out onto the patio, holding a tablet. "Boss, the shipping manifests for the new medical wing at the children's hospital need your signature. And the DA called—they’re dropping all remaining inquiries regarding the shelter transfer."

"Bring it here, Marco," Vincenzo said. He looked over at Arya, who was breaking off a piece of cooked bacon and tossing it into the air.

Bear caught it mid-air with a loud, satisfying snap of his jaws, his tail giving three powerful thumps against the stone patio floor.

Arya laughed—a bright, clear, musical sound that bounced off the high stone walls and filled every corner of the estate with light.

Vincenzo leaned back in his chair, taking a sip of his coffee, looking out over the garden. The silence that had plagued his home for three years was gone forever, replaced by the sound of his daughter’s voice and the quiet, watchful presence of the monster no one had wanted.

The war was over. The house was full of life. And for the first time in a long time, the Caruso family was finally home.
