Chapter 5 - The Extraction

The hallway blurred into a kaleidoscope of violence and desperate science. The electromagnetic pulse was working, but the cost was devastating; the house itself seemed to scream as the high-frequency waves tore through the wiring, causing the smart-home systems to malfunction. Lights strobed in an erratic, blinding rhythm, and the security doors slammed shut, sealing them inside the west wing.

Noah was arching his back, his screams now primal, animalistic. The parasite was fighting for its life, sensing the rejection from the host’s nervous system.

"Ethan! The secondary injector!" Elara shouted over the cacophony of shattering glass. She was pinned against the wall by one of the possessed staff members, her face bruised but her eyes focused.

Ethan sprinted toward Noah. He knelt in the debris, fighting to pin his son’s flailing arms. He could see it now—the creature wasn't just a liquid; it was a writhing, obsidian-colored knot pulsing beneath the skin of Noah’s chest, trying to burrow deeper toward the heart.

Vanessa stepped over the wreckage of the hallway, her silk robe torn. She wasn't fighting anymore; she was chanting, a high, melodic incantation designed to soothe the parasite, to command it to hold on.

"You don't understand the power you’re trying to unravel," she hissed, her voice sounding like a thousand dry leaves skittering on pavement. "That child is the nexus of a thousand-year bloodline. If you kill the parasite, you kill the potential of his soul!"

"I don't care about your potential!" Ethan roared, grabbing the injector from the floor. He didn't hesitate. He jammed the needle directly into the center of the pulsing, dark mass beneath Noah’s skin.

The reaction was instantaneous.

A high-pitched, harmonic shriek tore through the room—not from Noah, but from the air itself. The parasite, forced out by the chemical cocktail in the injector, began to liquefy. It forced itself upward, toward the throat. Noah gagged, his eyes rolling back in his head, as he vomited a thick, black, tar-like substance onto the pristine marble floor.

The substance hit the ground and began to scuttle, trying to find purchase, but Elara surged forward, ignoring her attacker. She slammed an ornate, silver-lined urn—prepared weeks ago for this very moment—over the writhing mass.

The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the sound of Noah’s ragged, wet breathing.

Vanessa’s expression shifted from arrogance to pure, unadulterated horror. She looked at her hands, which were beginning to tremble as the tether between her and the Vermiculus snapped. She collapsed to her knees, looking suddenly aged, the "perfection" of her appearance melting away like wax in a furnace.

Ethan didn't wait. He scooped his son into his arms, ignoring the mess, and ran toward the emergency exit he had unlocked hours ago. He didn't look back at the house, or at the woman who had tried to consume his family.
