Chapter 5 - Ethan’s Desperate Counter-Attack and Diane’s Demands

By 2:00 p.m., the legal storm had made landfall.
I was sitting in Victoria’s office reviewing our asset inventory when my phone began vibrating continuously on the glass table.
Call after call. Text after text.
Ethan: "Claire, what the hell did you do? The bank just locked my corporate card! I tried to buy lunch and it declined!" Ethan: "My boss just called me into HR. They're asking about Apex Strategy Group! Answer your phone!" Diane: "You ungrateful, malicious little witch! How dare you humiliate my son and ruin his career over a petty family dispute! Call off your lawyers immediately or you will pay dearly!"
I slid my phone across the table so Victoria could read the screen.
The attorney let out a short, amused bark of laughter. "Oh, they're panicking. That's wonderful. It means the freeze hit right as they were trying to transfer the down payment for the Lincoln Park condo."
"Should I answer?" I asked.
"Only on speaker, and only if you want to watch a drowning man thrash," Victoria replied, gesturing for me to hit speakerphone.
I tapped the screen and answered.
"Ethan," I said calmly.
"Claire! Thank God!" Ethan's voice was frantic, breathless, his corporate composure completely shattered. "Listen to me, whatever paperwork you filed, you need to call your lawyer right now and reverse it! The bank froze my accounts! HR is investigating my consulting firm! Madison is having contractions from the stress, Claire! You're going to make her lose the baby!"
I stared at the phone in sheer disbelief.
"Madison is having contractions, so it's my fault?" I asked, my voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Ethan, you committed mortgage fraud using my property. You stole thousands of dollars from our household to fund a secret apartment for your mistress. And you expect me to feel sorry that your house of cards is collapsing?"
"It was a business investment!" he yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. "We were going to pay it back once the condo appreciated! You have more money than you know what to do with, Claire! Your beauty brand prints cash while I have to sit in meetings all day listening to idiots talk about synergy! I deserved a little security!"
Victoria rolled her eyes, shaking her head.
"You didn't want security, Ethan," I said coldly. "You wanted a kept lifestyle funded by a woman you secretly despised. Well, congratulations. You're about to experience what real financial insecurity looks like."
Before he could reply, another voice broke onto the line—shrill, demanding, and utterly delusional.
"Claire! Put me on speaker!" Diane's voice shrieked through the receiver.
"She is on speaker, Diane," I replied evenly.
"Listen to me very carefully," Diane snapped, her tone dripping with toxic entitlement. "You will pack your bags and leave my son's townhouse immediately. Ethan told me everything—you manipulated him, you trapped him with your little business, and now you're acting like a hysterical shrew. If you sign over the deed to the townhouse and issue a public apology to my son, we might—might—consider letting you walk away without destroying your company's reputation!"
Victoria raised an eyebrow, picking up her pen and writing a quick note on a legal pad: Put her on video record.
"Diane," I said, a cold smile spreading across my face. "Let me make something crystal clear to you and your pathetic son."
"Don't you dare—"
"The townhouse is mine," I interrupted, my voice ringing out clearly in the conference room. "The business is mine. The money you used to pay for your weekend trips, your health club membership, and your dental work came out of my pocket. You are looking at a penniless, unemployed fraudster and a bitter, aging woman who is about to be evicted from her rent-free lifestyle."
"You b—"
"If you ever contact me, my brother, or my lawyer again," I continued, cutting her off completely, "I will ensure that every single item of furniture, every piece of jewelry, and every designer bag you own is seized by federal marshals as proceeds of wire fraud."
I tapped the red end call button.
The room fell completely silent.
Victoria leaned back in her leather chair, a slow, appreciative grin spreading across her face.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side, Claire," the attorney murmured.
"We're just getting started," I replied.
