Chapter 2 - The Silent Drive

The car ride to the hospital was a symphony of suffocating silence. Leo had fallen asleep against my shoulder, his small chest rising and falling in uneven rhythm, the remnants of frosting still dried on his collar like a stain of shame. In the driver’s seat, Mark gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were bone-white.

I stared out the window, watching the landscape blur. My mind kept returning to the patio. Why had Evelyn reacted with such visceral hatred? It wasn't just a rejection of a toddler; it was a rejection of reality. As we pulled into the hospital’s emergency entrance, Mark finally broke the silence.

"She wasn't trying to be cruel," he murmured, his voice cracking. "She was trying to warn us."

"Warn us?" I snapped, my protective instincts flaring. "She humiliated a four-year-old child in front of his entire family, Mark! There is no warning that justifies that kind of malice."

He turned to look at me, and for the first time, I saw the true state of his mind. He looked aged, terrified, and utterly defeated. "You don't understand, Sarah. The medical appointment—the one she told us to skip—she didn't skip it. She went alone. And the results... they weren't about her."

My breath hitched. "What are you talking about?"

He didn't answer. He simply put the car in park and stepped out, heading toward the sliding glass doors of the ER. I followed him, the weight of his words pressing down on me like a physical burden. We weren't here because of the cake. We were here because the "Grandma" title had been the only thing keeping a dark, secret history from unraveling.
