Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

With the immediate medical and physical crisis resolved, the full, sickening scope of my parents' systematic deception came to light during the pre-trial investigations conducted by the state attorney general’s office.
Evelyn Vance cracked under intense questioning within twenty-four hours of her arrest. Realizing she was entirely on her own, she cut a swift deal with prosecutors, spilling every detail of how my parents had bribed her with luxury weekend getaways at mountain cabins, paid-for restaurant tabs, and cash kickbacks in exchange for completely bypassing mandatory, in-person home inspections. Vance was immediately stripped of her social work license and faced a mandatory minimum of ten years in federal prison for public corruption, bribery, and official document forgery.
Meanwhile, my parents tried every manipulative trick in their arsenal. They retained high-priced defense attorneys, attempting to spin a narrative that they were merely "strict, old-school disciplinarians" who had been hopelessly overwhelmed by a "difficult, imaginative child." They tried to paint themselves as the tragic victims of a vindictive daughter and an unstable, recovering-addict son.
But their pathetic defense crumbled into dust when the forensic financial audits were finally released to the public record.

The state prosecutors presented detailed bank statements showing that over eighty thousand dollars in state care funds—money meant for Lizzy’s diapers, fresh food, doctor visits, and winter coats—had been systematically funneled into Caribbean cruises, high-end patio furniture, luxury golf club memberships, and designer clothing boutiques for my mother. While Lizzy was rationed to less than five hundred calories a day and locked away in the dark whenever neighbors dropped by, Gloria and Walt were living high on the hog.
The local community, once thoroughly fooled by my mother’s freshly baked apple pies and my father’s pressed Sunday church suits, recoiled in absolute, shuddering disgust. Old neighborhood friends stopped returning their phone calls, and local merchants who once praised them publicly now turned their backs on the street. The mask was shattered beyond all repair.
