Chapter 8 - The Investigation

The aftermath of the Gala was a whirlwind. Nicholas had been apprehended, and the subsequent investigation into his "Apex Holdings" uncovered a sprawling web of financial crimes that extended far beyond Thorne Industries. It turned out he hadn't just been stealing from Julian; he had been running a Ponzi scheme that had defrauded dozens of small-scale investors.

I was back in the office, but the atmosphere had changed. The "inner circle" that had once looked at me with disdain now treated me with a terrified, newfound respect. I was no longer the outsider; I was the person who held the keys to the kingdom.

However, the weight of the situation started to take its toll. My office was flooded with subpoenas and requests for depositions. Julian was consistently by my side, shielding me from the media frenzy, but the emotional exhaustion was real.

"You don't have to do this, Jenna," Julian said one evening, finding me in my office long after the rest of the building had gone dark. He walked over and poured me a glass of water, his touch lingering on my hand. "We have the lawyers to handle the rest of the investigation. You can step away."

"I can't," I said, looking at the mountain of documents on my desk. "If I step away, I’m letting him win by proxy. He used family as a weapon against me for years. Now, I’m using the law to ensure he can never hold that power again."

Julian walked around the desk, his shadow falling over me. He pulled me to my feet, his gaze searching mine. "You’ve already won, Jenna. You’ve exposed him. You’ve saved the firm. You’ve proved that the 'kids' table' doesn't define you. Why keep fighting?"

"Because I want to know who I am when the fighting stops," I confessed.

Julian pulled me closer, his hand coming to rest on the back of my neck. The air between us was heavy with everything we hadn't said. The professional boundary had long since eroded, replaced by a raw, magnetic pull. "You’re the strongest person I’ve ever met," he murmured. "And you’re mine. Not as a subordinate, not as a project. As an equal."

He kissed me—not the tentative kiss of an employer, but the kiss of a man who had finally stopped waiting. It was a release, a culmination of the last few months of tension, and in that moment, I realized that I wasn't just building a career. I was building a life.
