Chapter 8 - Stripped of Everything
The arraignment took place on a rainy Tuesday morning in the federal district courthouse downtown.
I sat in the back row of the gallery, wearing a simple, tailored charcoal coat, watching the proceedings unfold. Julian sat at the defense table between two public defenders—expensive private attorneys having refused to take his case once they realized his retainer funds were seized proceeds of crime.
He looked ten years older. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unwashed, and the arrogant smirk that had defined his entire life was completely gone, replaced by a dull, hollow stare of sheer disbelief.
The federal prosecutor laid out the charges with surgical precision: six counts of wire fraud, three counts of identity theft, two counts of financial elder abuse, and one count of interstate forgery.
“The defendant systematically exploited an incapacitated senior citizen, draining millions of dollars intended for legitimate estate distribution and charitable foundations,” the prosecutor told the judge, his voice echoing off the high marble ceilings. “Given the severity of the financial flight risk and the overwhelming digital evidence, the government requests remand without bail.”
Julian’s public defender tried to object, arguing for home confinement, but the judge didn't even let him finish.
“Mr. Sterling is charged with white-collar crimes of staggering scale, executed with calculated malice against his own flesh and blood,” the judge said, banging his gavel with a sharp, echoing crack. “Bail is denied. Remanded to federal custody pending trial.”
As the bailiffs stepped forward, clicking handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists, he turned his head toward the gallery. His eyes met mine across the courtroom.

There was no anger left in his gaze now—only a pathetic, desperate plea for rescue. He mouthed my name: “Elena... please.”
I didn't flinch. I didn't smile. I simply held his gaze for three long seconds, then stood up, buttoned my coat, and walked out of the courtroom doors into the bright, cleansing rain.
