Chapter 10 - A New Foundation

Three weeks later, the morning sun poured through the wide windows of our living room, warming the hardwood floor where Harper sat building an elaborate castle out of colorful wooden blocks.
She was fully recovered, her bright laughter echoing through the house just as it had before that terrifying afternoon.
The corporate fallout had been swift and absolute. Following Sabrina and Preston’s arrest, the board of directors held an emergency vote that unanimously granted me absolute operational and voting majority of Collins & Sons. My mother, humbled and broken by the betrayal of her favorite child, had quietly retired from public life, signing over her minor shares and moving into a quiet seaside condominium in Oregon.
We hadn't heard from her since. And frankly, the silence was healing.
The front door opened, and Nolan stepped inside, tossing his keys onto the entryway table and unbuttoning his emergency services jacket. He walked into the living room, dropped down onto the rug beside Harper, and immediately let out a dramatic groan as my daughter gleefully placed a plastic crown on top of his head.
“A king must have his guards, Daddy!” Harper announced, giggling as she handed him a tiny stuffed unicorn.
Nolan smiled, his eyes catching mine across the room. There was no shadow left in his expression—only the warm, steady anchor of a man who had stood by my side through the darkest storm of our lives.
He walked over to the kitchen island, where a fresh pitcher of lemonade sat glowing in the morning light—this one squeezed entirely by our own hands, with zero visitors allowed in the kitchen.
He poured two glasses, walked over, and handed one to me.
“To new foundations,” Nolan said softly, clinking his glass gently against mine.

“To truth,” I replied, taking a sip as I looked down at Harper laughing on the floor.
The past was behind us. The poison was gone. And for the first time in my life, the house was entirely ours.
