Chapter 3 - Cuffs and Consequences

The sound of sirens grew louder with terrifying speed, bouncing off the brick walls of the quiet neighborhood.

Marcus dropped my wrist as if it were on fire. "You crazy old bitch!" he roared, lunging toward the pantry door. He yanked a wooden broom from the corner and swung it wildly at the camera, smashing the plastic housing into pieces.

"It doesn't matter, Marcus!" I yelled over the deafening commotion, my chest burning with agonizing fire as I leaned against the cabinet. "It uploaded five minutes ago! The file is already on the server! It sent an automated silent alert the moment my heart rate spiked alongside high-frequency glass breaking!"

Rachel panicked completely. She grabbed her designer purse and turned toward the back door. "We have to leave! Marcus, let's go!"

"Nobody is going anywhere!"

The front door burst open with a deafening crash as four armed police officers flooded the hallway, handguns drawn, their boots heavy on the hardwood floor.

"Police! Hands where we can see them! On the floor, now!" a lead officer barked, his voice booming through the house.

Rachel shrieked, dropping her bag and throwing her hands in the air immediately, her face draining of all color. "It’s a mistake! She’s my mother! She’s confused! She fell!"

"Shut up, Rachel!" Marcus snarled, backing away toward the dining room, his face twisted in a mixture of rage and terror.

"I said down on the floor!" the sergeant commanded, stepping into the kitchen and taking in the scene instantly: the blood on the floor tiles, the shattered glass, my swollen face, and the folded legal documents sticking out of Marcus’s jacket pocket.

Two officers moved with military precision. They tackled Marcus to the ground before he could take another step, forcing his arms behind his back. The sharp snap of handcuffs clicking into place echoed off the blood-stained floorboards. Marcus screamed curses, thrashing against the tile, his expensive suit tearing at the elbows.

"Get off me! Do you know who I am? She’s an ungrateful old woman! It’s family business!" Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with desperation.

"You're under arrest for felony assault, extortion, and elder abuse," the sergeant said coldly, pulling Marcus up by his collar.

Another officer gently approached me, kneeling down with a medical kit. "Ma'am, stay still. Paramedics are right behind us."

As they dragged Marcus and Rachel toward the front door, Rachel turned her head toward me, tears of rage pouring down her face. "You ruined us! You ruined your own children over a piece of dirt and three million dollars!"

I looked at my daughter—the girl I had sacrificed my youth, my health, and my savings for—and felt no regret, only a deep, hollow finality.

"No, Rachel," I said as the paramedics rushed through the door with a stretcher. "You ruined yourselves the second you forgot I was your mother."
