Chapter 3 - The Master Trust

The dining room erupted into chaos. Jessica’s parents, who had flown in from out of state expecting to spend the holidays basking in the reflected glory of their daughter's supposed wealth, surged to their feet.

"This is a scam!" Jessica's father, Robert, bellowed, his face turning beet red as he jabbed a finger toward Marcus. "We saw the deeds! We saw the corporate filings! Mark told us he inherited the entire estate when Arthur retired!"

"Mark lied to you, Robert," I said calmly, breaking the silence as I picked up my cloth napkin and wiped my fingers. I looked across the table at my son, whose shoulders were trembling as he stared miserably at the polished wood. "Or rather, he let you believe a convenient fiction because it stroked his ego and kept his wife quiet."

Jessica whirled around to face her husband, grabbing the collar of his jacket and shaking him with violent desperation.

"Mark! Look at me! Tell him he’s lying!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a hysterical pitch. "Tell them your father signed over the corporation! Tell them we control the trust!"

Mark slowly lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, swimming with tears of absolute defeat. He wouldn't—he couldn't—look his wife in the eye.

"I can't, Jess," Mark whispered, his voice barely audible above the hum of the refrigerator. "There... there was never any transfer. Dad only gave me power of attorney over day-to-day operations while he traveled. The master trust... it was never mine."

Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening the leather portfolio and pulling out a thick stack of certified legal documents bound in dark blue cardstock. He laid them gently on the table right in front of Jessica's plate, replacing her shattered champagne glass with cold, unyielding reality.

"Allow me to clarify for the record," Marcus announced to the stunned room. "When Arthur Sterling founded Sterling Industries forty years ago, he established an irrevocable family trust. Under Section 4, Clause B of the trust charter, any beneficiary who attempts to seize control of the corporate assets through coercion, financial manipulation, or unauthorized freezing of the founder's personal accounts is automatically and permanently disinherited."

Marcus tapped the top document with his fountain pen.

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, "the deed to this estate was never transferred to Mark. It remains exclusively under the management of the Arthur Sterling Living Trust. Which means, Mrs. Jessica Sterling, you are standing in a house you do not own, eating food you did not pay for, funded by a man you just tried to cut off from his own money."

Jessica staggered backward, her legs hitting her chair, causing her to tumble clumsily onto the floor. Her parents rushed to pull her up, but she shoved them away, her mind completely unraveling as the magnitude of her stupidity crashed down upon her.
