Chapter 10 - A Bright Tomorrow

The evening sun dipped slowly below the horizon of the Pacific Ocean, setting the San Diego sky ablaze with magnificent brushstrokes of liquid gold, fiery amber, and deep violet.
I stepped out onto the front porch, wrapping a light cashmere cardigan around my shoulders, and breathed in the deep, refreshing stillness of a life entirely reclaimed. There was no lingering fear in my heart, no anxiety about hidden secrets lurking behind closed doors, and no shadow of intimidation cast by anyone else's expectations.
Nancy stepped out onto the porch beside me, clutching her favorite stuffed rabbit in one hand and looking up at me with a wide, gap-toothed, radiant smile.
“Mommy, can we make blueberry pancakes for breakfast tomorrow morning?” she asked brightly, her eyes sparkling in the twilight.
I knelt down, opening my arms wide and pulling her tightly against my heart, feeling the steady, healthy thump of her heartbeat against my chest.

“We can make pancakes, waffles, and anything else your heart desires, my sweet angel,” I whispered, pressing a tender kiss to the top of her head. “Because tomorrow, and every single day after that, belongs entirely to us.”
She giggled, resting her sleepy head comfortably against my shoulder as we watched the very first evening stars flicker to life across the vast, beautiful expanse of the California sky. The nightmare was finally over. Our bright, unbreakable tomorrow had officially begun.
