Chapter 7 - The Ambush at the Steps

By 8:30 AM, the sun had finally broken through the cloud cover, casting a bright, harsh light over the marble steps of the Multnomah County Courthouse in downtown Portland.

The plaza below was packed with news vans, reporters, and curious onlookers.

Adrian had turned the entire situation into a public circus. He stood at the top of the wide stone stairs, dressed in a black suit, flanked by two high-priced defense attorneys and the hospital's public relations officer.

Standing beside him, looking pale, terrified, and holding a small crutch under his arm, was Caleb.

They had released Caleb from the hospital into Adrian’s temporary custody under the authority of the emergency ex-parte order. Adrian had his hand resting on Caleb’s small shoulder—a grip that looked affectionate to the cameras, but I knew it was tight enough to keep my son from moving an inch.

"Members of the press," Adrian’s attorney spoke into a cluster of microphones. "Dr. Cole is making a plea to his wife, Laura, to surrender peacefully so she can receive the medical treatment she desperately needs. Dr. Cole’s only priority has ever been the health of his family."

Adrian stepped forward toward the microphones, bringing his face close. He looked straight into the news cameras, his eyes welling up with perfectly rehearsed tears.

"Laura," Adrian said, his voice breaking with dramatic emotion. "If you are watching this... please. Come home. We love you. Nobody is angry with you. We just want to get you help."

"She doesn't need your help, Adrian!" a voice echoed across the granite plaza.

The crowd of reporters gasped, turning around in unison.

I stepped out from behind the grand marble pillars at the edge of the stairs.

I was covered in mud, my hair was a wild tangle under Mae's baseball cap, and my clothes were soaked. But as I walked up the center of the steps, my head was held high, my stride firm, and my eyes locked onto my husband.

"Laura!" Adrian shouted, his expression shifting for a fraction of a second into pure shock before he quickly smoothed it back into fake concern. He turned to the two police officers standing nearby. "Officers! That's her! She's off her medication! Seize her gently!"

The officers moved down the steps toward me, pulling out their plastic zip-ties.

"Stop right there!" I commanded, holding up the red metallic USB flash drive in my right hand, while holding a stack of printed emails from Vance’s basement in my left.

"This drive contains the complete, unedited digital evidence of Dr. Adrian Cole paying forty thousand dollars to disgraced ex-physician Harrison Vance to forge my psychiatric records!" I announced, my voice booming through the PA systems of the news crews.

The reporters immediately swiveled their cameras from Adrian to me.

"Check the file hashes!" I yelled, tossing a copy of the printed emails to the lead reporter from KGW News. "Adrian Cole didn't heal my son! He intentionally infected Caleb’s leg with a rubber drain tube to stage a heroic medical recovery! He’s been poisoning and injuring our son for four years to feed his own twisted ego!"

"She's delusional!" Adrian barked, his calm facade finally shattering into violent rage. He grabbed Caleb’s arm harder, pulling the boy back toward the courthouse doors. "Officers, arrest her now!"

"Mommy!" Caleb suddenly screamed, breaking free from Adrian’s grip.

Using his crutch, Caleb threw himself down the steps toward me, ignoring the pain in his leg. "Mommy! He put the black thing in my leg! I saw him! He told me not to tell you!"

The entire plaza went dead silent.

The news cameras caught every single word. The reporters stood frozen, their mouths open.

Officer Miller, who had just stepped onto the plaza from her patrol car, walked up the stairs past me. She looked at Caleb crying on the steps, then looked at the printed emails in the reporter's hands, and finally looked up at Adrian Cole.

"Dr. Cole," Officer Miller said, her voice like ice as she unholstered her handcuffs. "Step away from the boy."

"This is an outrage!" Adrian screamed, his face turning purple with fury, his eyes darting frantically around the crowd of cameras recording his every movement. "I am the Chief of Vascular Surgery! You can't touch me! I saved him! I SAVE EVERYONE!"

Two officers stepped behind Adrian, grabbing his arms and pulling them behind his back.

The heavy steel handcuffs clicked into place with a sharp, final sound that echoed off the marble walls of the courthouse.
