Chapter 6 - The Restructuring

Celeste scrambled back onto her feet, wiping her eyes with the sleeve of her trench coat, watching me like a condemned prisoner waiting for the judge to read the final sentence.

I walked over to my desk, picked up a blue folder that David Sterling had prepared at dawn, and tossed it onto the coffee table in front of her.

"What is this?" Celeste asked, her voice cracking.

"That is your conditional surrender," I said, leaning against the edge of my desk. "Read section three."

Celeste opened the folder with shaking hands, her eyes scanning the dense legal text.

"Voss Aesthetics will enter a voluntary Chapter 11 restructuring," I explained. "You will surrender one hundred percent of your voting equity to Vanguard Apex Capital. The clinic will be renamed The Lin Medical Center."

Celeste gasped softly, but didn't interrupt.

"You will remain as Chief of Surgery," I continued. "Because, as you said, you are a skilled surgeon. But you will no longer hold administrative power. You will receive a fixed base salary of three hundred thousand dollars a year—which is more than enough to live comfortably, but a far cry from the millions you were siphoning into your personal luxury accounts."

"And the remaining profits?" she asked faintly.

"Seventy percent will go directly toward paying off the twenty-four million dollar debt owed to Vanguard," I stated. "The remaining thirty percent will be redirected into a newly created fund: The Lin Foundation for Financial Abuse Victims. A foundation designed to provide legal and financial defense for women whose spouses attempted to destroy them during divorces."

Celeste stared at the paper, tears brimming in her eyes once more. But this time, there was no fight left in her. The cold, untouchable surgeon had been completely dismantled.

"And if I refuse?" she asked, though we both knew she had no choice.

"If you refuse, Vanguard files for full liquidation at nine o'clock this morning," I said flatly. "Your medical license will be audited by the state board for false financial reporting, your equipment will be auctioned off to medical supply liquidators at twenty cents on the dollar, and you will be personally bankrupt by Friday."

Celeste pulled a pen from her coat pocket. She didn't even turn to the final page; she signed her name on the preliminary terms right there on the coffee table.

"He told me you were weak," Celeste whispered, capping her pen and looking at me with a mixture of terror and awe. "Adrian told me you were the weakest person he had ever met."

"Adrian mistakes peace for weakness," I replied, taking the signed document from her hand. "He thinks because someone doesn't scream, they don't have a voice. He’s about to find out how loud a courtroom can be."

"What’s going to happen to him?" Celeste asked softly.

"Adrian’s bail hearing is at eleven o'clock," I said, checking my watch. "His mother is currently trying to liquidate her small retirement account to post his bond. But David Sterling is filing a secondary motion to freeze her assets as well, since Adrian used her accounts to launder forty thousand dollars of my mother's stolen jewel proceeds."

Celeste flinched. "He implicated his own mother?"

"Adrian doesn't love people, Celeste," I said, looking her straight in the eyes. "He loves what people can do for his mirror. You were his mirror. I was his foundation. And when he broke the foundation, the mirror was always going to crash."

I walked her to the elevator doors, pressing the down button.

"Be at the clinic at eight AM tomorrow, Dr. Voss," I told her as the doors slid open. "Wear scrubs. No cameras. No press. You have six surgeries scheduled, and your new boss expects you to be on time."

Celeste stepped into the elevator, bowing her head slightly. "Yes, Ms. Lin."

As the gold doors swept shut, Maya walked back into the foyer holding a fresh tablet.

"David Sterling is on line one," Maya announced. "He’s at the criminal courthouse. Adrian’s public defender is asking for a private conference before the arraignment."

May you like

"A public defender?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. "What happened to the high-priced defense firm Adrian boasted about hiring last night?"

Maya smiled brightly. "Their retainer check bounced twenty minutes ago."
