Chapter 8 - The Betrayal from Within

The flashing blue and red lights of the police cruisers stained the white stone facade of the Parker estate, casting long, erratic shadows across the manicured lawn. Deputy Hall and three other officers burst through the front doors, weapons drawn, their heavy boots thudding against the polished hardwood.

Constance stood frozen behind the desk, her hand trembling so violently that the delicate china teacup finally slipped from her fingers, shattering on the floor.

"Step away from the desk, ma'am," Hall commanded, his voice echoing off the high ceilings.

I didn't watch them cuff her. I didn't care about the look of utter defeat on her face as they led her away. I ran up the grand staircase, my heart hammering against my ribs, throwing open every door until I found them.

In a guest bedroom at the end of the hall, Lily and Toby were sitting on a large bed. A woman I didn't know—presumably the nanny Constance had hired—was cowering in the corner. When Lily saw me, she let go of her rabbit and threw herself into my arms, Toby scrambling right behind her.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, her face buried in my neck. "The man from the street said we were going to a surprise party for Grandma. But I didn't believe him. I kept Toby close."

"You did perfectly, baby," I choked out, holding them so tightly I was afraid I’d cut off their breath. "It's over now. I've got you."

By midnight, we were back in the safety of our own home. The house was quiet, the locks double-checked, the security system fully armed. Deputy Hall stayed stationed outside in his cruiser, a reassuring presence beneath the streetlamp. I sat on the living room floor, watching my children finally sleep peacefully on the sofa, exhausted from the ordeal.

My phone vibrated on the coffee table. It was an unknown number.

I hesitated, then answered, pressing the phone to my ear. "Hello?"

"Elena," a familiar voice whispered. It was Sarah Jenkins. My lawyer.

"Sarah? What's going on? They arrested Constance. We have the audio files, the financial ledger—"

"Elena, listen to me carefully," Sarah interrupted, her voice tight, laced with a panic I had never heard from her before. "You need to leave the house. Right now."

"What? Why?"

"I was forced to... I didn't have a choice," Sarah stammered, her voice cracking. "Derek... his associates... they have my daughter, Elena. They told me if I didn't give them the secondary decryption keys to the files you gave me, they would kill her."

The room seemed to tilt. Sarah wasn't just my lawyer. She had been the repository for all our evidence. She had access to the master drive.

"What did you do, Sarah?" I whispered, my blood running instantly cold.

"I gave them the keys," she sobbed. "And I gave them your new security bypass codes. They know Hall is outside, but they aren't coming for the front door. They’re already inside the perimeter. Get the kids and run!"

The line went dead.

Before I could even process the words, the overhead lights in my living room flickered and died, plunging the house into pitch blackness. The comforting hum of the refrigerator ceased. The green glow of the security panel turned a solid, ominous red.

They were already here.
