CHAPTER TWO: The Questions No One Could Answer

The room fell silent.
Even the steady beeping of the heart monitor seemed louder than before.
Chloe looked from her father to Dr. Clara with the simple curiosity only a child could have. She wasn't trying to uncover a secret. She was only asking the question that neither adult had been brave enough to ask themselves.
"Why do both of you look like you're about to cry?"
Clara managed a small smile.
"Sometimes grown-ups remember things they weren't expecting."
Chloe accepted the answer with a thoughtful nod.
"Oh."
It seemed enough for her.
For now.
A few minutes later, the orthopedic technician finished securing Chloe's bright pink cast.
"Looks perfect," he said cheerfully.
"You'll wear this for about six weeks."
Chloe frowned dramatically.
"Can I still draw?"
"You certainly can."
"Can I still eat ice cream?"
He laughed.
"I think your arm will heal even faster if you do."
Chloe looked at Clara with a grin.
"I like this hospital."
Clara laughed softly.
"I'm glad."
Julian watched the exchange quietly.
He had never seen Chloe warm up to a stranger so quickly.
There was something about Clara's calm voice that made frightened children feel safe.
It was one of the reasons he had fallen in love with her.
After Chloe was moved to an observation room, Clara stepped into the hallway to finish her notes.
She had barely typed the first sentence when she heard footsteps behind her.
"Clara."
She didn't turn around.
"I'm working."
"I know."
His voice was lower now.
Careful.
"I only need a minute."
She saved the chart before facing him.
"What?"
Julian struggled to find the right words.
Instead, his eyes drifted once more to her pregnancy.
"Is..."
He stopped himself.
Clara knew exactly what he wanted to ask.
"Not here."
"Please."
"My daughter is ten feet away."
"So is every nurse in this department."
She folded her arms.
"This isn't the place."
Julian nodded slowly.
"You're right."
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Then he whispered,
"I didn't know."
Clara searched his face.
For months she had imagined this moment.
She had imagined anger.
Denial.
Excuses.
Instead, she saw only confusion.
Real confusion.
It unsettled her more than she expected.
Across the hall, Chloe watched through the partly open curtain.
"Dad?"
Julian immediately returned to her bedside.
"What's wrong?"
"My arm feels funny."
"That's normal," Clara explained as she entered the room.
"The medicine is starting to work."
Chloe looked at Clara carefully.
"Are you having a baby?"
Julian closed his eyes briefly.
Children had no sense of timing.
Clara smiled gently.
"I am."
"When?"
"In about two months."
Chloe's eyes widened.
"That's exciting."
Clara nodded.
"It is."
"Is it a boy or a girl?"
"We don't know yet."
"I think it's a girl."
Julian looked down at the floor.
The conversation felt strangely ordinary.
Painfully ordinary.
As though life had continued without him.
Because it had.
A nurse entered carrying discharge paperwork.
"Everything looks good."
She handed Julian a folder.
"Orthopedics will see Chloe next week."
"Thank you."
The nurse smiled.
"And thank you, Dr. Bennett."
After she left, Chloe quietly tugged on Clara's sleeve.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Will you still be here if I ever come back?"
Clara smiled.
"I hope you won't need to."
"But if you do..."
"I'll do my best."
Satisfied, Chloe leaned back against her pillow.
"You smell like my grandma."
Clara laughed.
"Is that a compliment?"
"She smells like lavender."
"I like lavender."
"So do I."
Half an hour later, Chloe was ready to leave.
She slipped her small hand into Julian's.
Before walking out, she turned back toward Clara.
"Bye, Dr. Clara."
"Goodbye, Chloe."
"Thank you for fixing me."
"It was my pleasure."
Then Chloe did something unexpected.
She walked back across the room and gently hugged Clara around the waist—carefully avoiding her belly.
"I hope your baby has a nice daddy."
The words landed like a stone in complete silence.
Julian froze.
Clara stopped breathing for a moment.
Chloe smiled innocently, unaware of what she had just said.
"My daddy says babies need someone who loves them every day."
Clara swallowed hard.
"They do."
Chloe waved one last time before leaving the room.
Julian followed her into the corridor.
Just before reaching the elevators, he turned back.
"Clara."
She looked up.
"If..."
He hesitated.
"If that baby is mine..."
Clara interrupted him calmly.
"If?"
His shoulders fell.
He realized how the word had sounded.
"I didn't mean..."
"No."
She shook her head.
"You meant exactly what you said."
"I just..."
"I don't know what happened after we separated."
Clara looked at him steadily.
"We didn't separate because I stopped loving you."
"We separated because you told me there wasn't room for me in your future."
Julian stared at her.
"I said that because—"
The elevator doors opened behind him.
Chloe called from inside.
"Daddy!"
He looked back toward his daughter.
Then at Clara again.
"I need to explain."
Clara's pager sounded.
Another trauma alert.
A nurse hurried toward her.
"Doctor, ambulance arriving. Four-year-old with respiratory distress."
She was already pulling on another pair of gloves.
"Duty calls."
Julian nodded.
"So does mine."
For the second time that night, they walked away from each other.
An hour later, the emergency department finally grew quiet.
Clara sat alone in the staff lounge, staring at the untouched cup of tea in front of her.
Her colleague and closest friend, Dr. Maya Chen, quietly sat beside her.
"I've never seen you look this shaken."
Clara gave a tired smile.
"My ex showed up."
"The father?"
Clara nodded.
"Does he know?"
"He knows I'm pregnant."
"Does he know the baby is his?"
Clara looked down at her hands.
"I never told him."
Maya frowned gently.
"Why not?"
Clara took a slow breath.
"The morning I was going to tell him..."
She reached into her locker and removed a folded envelope she had carried for months.
It was worn around the edges.
Across the front were the words:
For Julian
"I came to his office."
"He had already left for London."
"He accepted a three-year international project."
"I thought..."
Her voice broke.
"I thought he'd chosen his career over us."
Maya looked at the unopened letter.
"You never mailed it?"
Clara shook her head.
"No."
"What did it say?"
Clara carefully unfolded the paper.
Only one sentence was written inside.
We're going to be parents.
She folded it again, tears gathering in her eyes.
"I thought he had already made his choice."
Across town, Julian sat awake beside Chloe's bed, replaying every moment from the emergency room.
One question echoed louder than all the others.
If Clara had known she was pregnant...
May you like
Why had she never told him?
Neither of them realized that the answer lay in a misunderstanding that had changed both of their lives.
