Chapter 6 - The Unmasking

The recovery took months. The legal battles were exhaustive, but the evidence was irrefutable. My father and Jaxson were sentenced to years behind bars, their influence erased from the world as completely as their debt.

The house felt different now. It was no longer a cage, but a sanctuary. Julian’s shoulder had healed, but the mark remained—a permanent reminder of the day he chose love over retribution.

We were in the library, the fire crackling in the hearth. It was the anniversary of our 'wedding.' Julian stood by the window, watching the rain against the glass. He had discarded the cane, the mask, and the heavy burden of his father’s ghost. He was just Julian.

He turned to me, holding a small box. "I never meant for this to start this way," he said softly. "I wanted to hurt you. I wanted to use you. But somewhere along the way, I realized that hurting you was the same as hurting myself."

He opened the box. It wasn't a diamond necklace like the one Jaxson had used to control me. It was a simple, elegant band.

"I don't want a trophy wife," he said, taking my hand and sliding the ring onto my finger. "I don't want a business transaction. I want a partner. I want a life. I want to build something that isn't built on lies or skeletons."

I looked into his eyes—the same piercing blue eyes that had once terrified me—and saw only the future. I reached up, tracing the line of his jaw, the skin soft and real, no mask in sight.

"I choose you, Julian," I whispered. "For real this time."

That night, the bedroom door wasn't locked with fear. It was locked against the world, leaving us in a space that was finally, truly ours. We weren't the debt-ridden girl and the vengeful billionaire. We were just two people who had survived the fire and found each other in the ashes.

The revenge was over. The debt was paid. And as he pulled me into his arms, I knew that the rest of our lives was just beginning. It was, at last, a happy ending.
