Chapter 7 - The Hidden Safe

Two days later, the rain poured over Greenwich in heavy, gray sheets.

The estate had been cleared of police tape, though two private security officers I hired now stood guard at the iron gates. Eleanor Vance had been formally indicted as an accomplice to first-degree murder and evidence tampering, held on a five-million-dollar bond she couldn't afford.

Arthur Sterling sat with me in my father’s study.

We had spent the last forty-eight hours reviewing corporate ledgers, bank accounts, and personal correspondence.

“Valeria,” Arthur said, setting down a pair of reading glasses. “There is one loose end we haven't resolved. Your father kept a secondary safe—a physical safety deposit box—at the Manhattan Central Bank. The key was on the brass ring police confiscated from Eleanor.”

I looked up from my tea. “Did Eleanor know what was inside it?”

“No,” Arthur said, pulling a heavy black steel box from his leather bag. “Police returned the contents to me an hour ago after cataloging them. This box was deposited by Richard three weeks ago.”

Arthur placed the box on the desk and unlocked it using the master key.

Inside lay three neatly bound items:

A thick blue leather journal written in my father’s handwriting.

A black USB flash drive labeled “IN CASE OF EMERGENCY.”

A small, velvet jewelry box.

My hands trembled as I reached into the steel box and picked up the small velvet container. I opened it softly.

Inside sat my mother’s diamond engagement ring—a heirloom that had gone missing from my mother’s jewelry armoire two years ago. Attached to the ring was a handwritten tag in my father’s small, precise script:

“Recovered from Julian’s private desk drawer in corporate headquarters. He intended to sell it to pay his gambling debts in Atlantic City. He never loved our family, Valeria. Forgive me for bringing him into your life.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, dropping onto the velvet lining.

“He was protecting me,” I whispered. “Even when I didn't see it.”

“Look at the flash drive, Valeria,” Arthur suggested quietly.

We plugged the black USB drive into my father’s desktop computer. A single video file appeared on the screen, dated four days before my father’s death.

I clicked play.

The video was recorded from a hidden pinhole camera my father had installed inside the bookshelf, pointed directly at his executive desk.

On the screen, my father was sitting in his chair, working late at night. The study door opened, and Julian walked into the frame, holding a tray with two cups of herbal tea.

“Here’s your tea, Richard,” Julian’s voice came through the computer speakers with terrifying clarity. “It’ll help you rest.”

“Leave it on the table, Julian,” my father replied without looking up.

The video showed Julian stepping behind my father’s chair. While my father turned his back to look at a file cabinet, Julian pulled a small eyedropper from his suit pocket and squeezed four clear drops of liquid into my father’s teacup.

Julian then picked up the cup, blew on it gently to cool it, and handed it directly to my father.

“Drink it while it’s hot,” Julian said on the recording, offering a warm, sweet smile.

I covered my mouth, gasping for air as I watched my father take a slow sip of the poisoned tea.

“My God...” Arthur breathed, clutching the edge of the desk. “He filmed the actual poisoning.”

“Why didn't Dad call the police right then?” I cried out, unable to comprehend what I was seeing.

Arthur pointed to the date on the bottom corner of the video.

“Look at the date, Valeria,” Arthur explained softly. “That was four days ago. Your father didn't drink enough to kill him that night—it was a slow-building dose. Richard didn't check the security footage until Wednesday morning. When he saw this video, he immediately called me to change his will.”

“And before he could hand this video to the police,” I realized, “Julian came back on Thursday night to finish the job.”

“Yes,” Arthur said, closing his eyes. “This video is the absolute nail in Julian Vance’s coffin. This isn't just circumstantial evidence—this is cold, hard, undisputed video proof of attempted murder and premeditated poisoning.”
